Novel metallic separator coupled composite phase change material passive thermal design for large format prismatic battery pack

Virendra Talele et al.

Summary: In order to improve the operating performance of lithium-ion battery packs under different charging rates and higher ambient temperatures, a thermal management system composed of a phase change material and a passive metallic connection is proposed. The thermal performance of the battery pack is investigated at constant charge rates of 1C, 2C, 3C, and the harshest 4C rate. Three configurations are studied, and the results show that the proposed improved thermal design with a graphene-enhanced high thermal conductive metallic separator is effective in increasing the temperature delay effect. The comparison between paraffin wax PCM and EG CPCM suggests that EG CPCM provides better delay effect due to its higher thermal conductivity and greater heat transfer performance.

Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Thermal Performance of an Air-Cooled Battery Module Under High Ambient Temperature Conditions

Dinesh Kumar Sharma et al.

Summary: Lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) are widely used in electric vehicles due to their high energy and power density. The thermal performance of an air-cooled battery module containing 16 high-energy density LiBs was investigated through experiments and simulations. The study found that temperature rise, temperature non-uniformity, and maximum temperature of the module's battery cells were important factors in evaluating the thermal performance. Increasing airflow rate decreased temperature but increased pressure drop, and high ambient temperatures affected LiB temperatures significantly, requiring additional cooling methods.

Summary: Heat pipes are receiving increasing interest in the thermal management of EV and HEV battery packs due to their superconductive capability, robustness, low maintenance, and longevity. However, the lack of understanding about their limitations during rapid heat fluctuations, adverse environmental conditions, performance under multiple heat loads, failure criteria in battery thermal management, and the lack of simple and versatile thermal models are hindering the commercialization of heat pipe-based battery thermal management systems. This comprehensive review aims to address these issues and provide insights for further development of this promising thermal management system.

An experimental investigation and hybrid neural network modelling of thermal management of lithium-ion batteries using a non-paraffinic organic phase change material, Myristyl alcohol

V. Muthya Goud et al.

Summary: The usage of electric vehicles is increasing worldwide to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and decrease oil dependence. Li-ion batteries have a promising future due to their lightweight, high energy density, and long lifespan. Cooling strategies, particularly with the use of phase change materials (PCM), are essential for improving the lifespan, safety, and performance of Li-ion batteries. In this study, experiments were conducted to compare natural convection air cooling with PCM-assisted cooling, and it was found that PCM-assisted cooling significantly reduced the battery module's maximum temperature and increased the time the module remained within desired operating conditions. Furthermore, a prediction model using ANFIS was developed to estimate the battery module's maximum temperature values and showed high accuracy.

Summary: The hybrid battery thermal management system (BTMS), which combines an active thermal management system (TMS) and a passive TMS based on phase change material (PCM), is effective in maintaining battery temperature within a suitable range. It provides greater cooling effect compared to a passive TMS and consumes less energy than an active TMS. The research findings show that the structure of the active TMS plays a crucial role in thermal management. Simulation and study of different cooling duct structures and cold air stream pressure differences confirm the safety and effectiveness of the proposed hybrid BTMS in temperature control.
