Quantification of electron transfer on carbon nanotubes: Effect of edge defects on electro-oxidation of glycerol catalyzed by platinum

Jingyan Ming et al.

Summary: A facile method combining electrochemical and spectroscopic technologies was proposed to evaluate the electron transfer reaction rate on carbon nanotubes with defects. The transferred electrons from CNTs were quantitatively determined through the Beer-Lambert law and coulometric analysis. It was revealed that the edge defects on CNTs are beneficial for the electron transfer reaction rate, leading to higher activity in the electrooxidation of glycerol for Pt/d-CNTs.

Realizing ultra-stable SnO2 anodes via in-situ formed confined space for volume expansion

Zijin Yang et al.

Summary: A template-free heterogeneous carbonization strategy was reported for fabricating SnO2/carbon/void/carbon nanofibers compound membrane, which acts as a buffer layer for volume changes of SnO2. Reduced graphene oxide was introduced to construct a free-standing electrode with a conductive network for improved electrochemical performances in lithium/sodium-ion batteries. The SCVC-rGO anodes showed higher reversible capacity, longer lifespan, and superior rate capability in both battery systems.

Understanding and modifications on lithium deposition in lithium metal batteries

Qin-Ya Yang et al.

Summary: Lithium metal has been considered as an ideal anode for next-generation secondary batteries due to its low density, high specific capacity, and low voltage potential. However, uncontrollable dendrite growth and volume change have limited its commercial use. As lithium-ion batteries approach their theoretical limits, there is an urgent need to develop energy storage devices with practical capacity. This review summarizes the nucleation and growth processes of lithium deposition on lithium metal anodes and discusses the beneficial effects of modified three-dimensional porous anodes in suppressing dendrite growth.

Guided lithium nucleation and growth on lithiophilic tin-decorated copper substrate

Lang Ye et al.

Summary: The study develops an ultrathin Sn-decorated Cu substrate (Sn@Cu) to induce ordered Li nucleation and growth behavior, which lowers the Li nucleation overpotential and promotes fast Li-migration kinetics, resulting in dendrite-free Li deposition with large granular morphology and improved Coulombic efficiency and cycling performance of lithium batteries. The Sn@Cu electrode exhibits a prolonged lifespan and low overpotential in high current density conditions. The research also demonstrates enhanced cycling stability and rate performance when paired with a commercial LiFePO4 cathode.

In situ formed three-dimensional (3D) lithium-boron (Li-B) alloy as a potential anode for next-generation lithium batteries

Hai-Feng Huang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the use of in situ formed three-dimensional lithium-boron alloy as an excellent alternative to lithium metal, with the potential to improve battery performance by adjusting the boron content. The Li-B alloy with the lowest boron content showed the lowest interface resistance, while the 15LiB alloy exhibited the best cycling performance.
