Influence of artificial UV degradation on the performance of steel/GFRP single-lap joints during exposure time

Hiasmim Rohem Gualberto et al.

Summary: Metal structures can be repaired with composites using adhesives. However, exposure to ultraviolet radiation can degrade the polymeric materials in the adhesive, leading to a decline in shear strength and a reduction in the adhesive's glass transition temperature (Tg). The degradation of the adhesive's polymeric chains is associated with the reduction in Tg and shear strength of the joint. Therefore, the application of such materials in UV-exposed areas should consider their poorer performance regarding degradation.

Developing chemical interaction and achieving mechanical interlock to manufacture high-reliability Polypropylene/A6061-T6 aluminum alloy FAW joints

Mengjia Xu et al.

Summary: This work proposes an interfacial design strategy to manufacture high-reliability PP/A6061-T6 aluminum alloy hybrid structures by friction assisted welding. The strategy involves grafting carboxy group on PP and building a surficial microstructure on 6061 to develop interfacial covalent and hydrogen bonds. The surface microstructures enable good wetting and fast spread of melt PP, providing sufficient reaction area and time for the development of interfacial chemical interaction.

Heteroatom Introduction to Reconstruct Interfacial Chemical Structures for High-Reliability CFRTP/A6061-T6 Hybrid Structures

Xiaoyang Bi et al.

Summary: This study presents a bottom-up strategy of introducing heteroatoms into CFRTP/metal interfaces to reconstruct the interfacial chemical structures and manufacture high-reliability hybrid structures. By introducing oxygen and hydrogen heteroatoms through simple and green plasma polymerization, the joint strength of CFRTP/6061 hybrid structures is strengthened from 8.82 to 23.97 MPa. This heteroatom introduction strategy provides fresh insights into interfacial design concepts and has important implications for the future application of high-reliability CFRTP/metal hybrid structures.

A Conceptual Strategy toward High-Reliability Metal-Thermoplastic Hybrid Structures Based on a Covalent-Bonding Mechanism

Xiaoyang Bi et al.

Summary: Metal-thermoplastic hybrid structures have shown effectiveness in achieving lightweight design in aircraft components. However, the differences in physical and chemical properties between metal and thermoplastic pose challenges in fabricating high-reliability hybrid structures. A study discovers that covalent bonding at metal/thermoplastic interfaces plays a crucial role in the interfacial reliability of these structures. By grafting carboxyl functional group on polyetheretherketone (PEEK), the density and strength of interfacial covalency is increased, leading to the fabrication of high-reliability hybrid structures between PEEK and A6061-T6 aluminum alloy.
