Monsoon Depression Amplification by Horizontal Shear and Humidity Gradients: A Shallow Water Perspective

D. L. Suhas et al.

Summary: Transient, synoptic-scale vortices are responsible for a significant amount of rainfall in monsoon regions and are often linked to extreme precipitation events. This study investigates the mechanisms of their amplification, focusing on the role of meridional gradients in zonal wind and environmental humidity. By using a shallow water model, it is found that the amplification of rotational winds is primarily influenced by meridional shear of the environmental zonal wind, while vortex precipitation rates are most sensitive to environmental moisture gradients. The results suggest that both zonal wind and humidity gradients contribute to the amplification of vortices, but with some decoupling of dry rotational flow and moist convection.

Observed increase in the peak rain rates of monsoon depressions

S. Vishnu et al.

Summary: Most extreme precipitation in central India is caused by monsoon lows and monsoon depressions. Using satellite data and atmospheric reanalysis, this study reveals that rain rates have increased in the southwest quadrant of monsoon depressions and decreased in the eastern quadrants. The intensity of rotational winds around the storm center showed no clear trends.

Higher Sensitivity of Northern Hemisphere Monsoon to Anthropogenic Aerosol Than Greenhouse Gases

Jian Cao et al.

Summary: Due to increased greenhouse gas emissions, the summer monsoon precipitation in the Northern Hemisphere has significantly decreased during the historical period. Simulations show that anthropogenic aerosols are the main cause of this decrease, while greenhouse gases primarily affect surface warming. The results indicate that reducing aerosol emissions may rapidly recover the Northern Hemisphere monsoon precipitation.

Summary: The growth of South Asian monsoon depressions is fostered by the coexistence of a strong low-level MSE gradient and strong meridional wind shear associated with the monsoon trough. These two features interact to enhance the disturbance and lead to increased rainfall.

Observed Trends in the South Asian Monsoon Low-Pressure Systems and Rainfall Extremes Since the Late 1970s

Yujia You et al.

Summary: Since 1979, there has been a positive trend in extreme rainfall in south-central India and a negative trend in north-central India. This trend in extreme rainfall aligns with the trend in the number of Indian monsoon low-pressure systems passing through these regions. The changing path of LPSs is likely associated with a wetter environment due to a strengthened cross-equatorial moisture transport.

Downstream and In Situ Genesis of Monsoon Low-Pressure Systems in Climate Models

K. S. S. Sai Srujan et al.

Summary: Monsoon low-pressure systems (LPSs) play a significant role in Indian rainfall, with in situ genesis mechanism dominating in climate models. While the bulk statistics of LPS genesis in models are comparable to observations, substantial inter-model variability and biases in the temporal distribution were observed, with models simulating a higher number of genesis in the early stages of monsoon.
