Automated treatment planning for liver cancer stereotactic body radiotherapy

Ling He et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the quality of fully automated SBRT planning based on volumetric modulated arc therapy, which reduces the reliance on historical plans and dosimetrist experience. Results showed that fully automated plans achieved better organ sparing and shorter planning time compared to manual plans.

Treatment plan comparison of volumetric-modulated arc therapy to intensity-modulated radiotherapy in lung stereotactic body radiotherapy using either 6-or 10-MV photon energies

Zhigong Wei et al.

Summary: In this study, VMAT-based plans were found to significantly reduce the dose to organs at risk (OARs) and steepen the dose fall-off curves compared to IMRT-based plans in lung SBRT. Plans using 6-MV energy level performed better in terms of OARs dose and dose fall-off than those using 10-MV. The differences between VMAT and IMRT techniques were more obvious than those between different energy levels.

Image-Guided Liver Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy Using VMAT and Real-Time Adaptive Tumor Gating: Evaluation of the Efficacy and Toxicity for Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Marie Cantaloube et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) using volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) and real-time adaptive tumor gating for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is effective with optimal local control and low toxicity, especially in patients not eligible for other local therapies. Additionally, the diameter of lesions and the volume of PTV were found to be associated with disease-free survival and overall survival in HCC patients receiving SBRT with VMAT.

Influence of target dose heterogeneity on dose sparing of normal tissue in peripheral lung tumor stereotactic body radiation therapy

Zhigong Wei et al.

Summary: The study showed that for peripheral lung tumor SBRT, improving target conformity, normal tissue dose, and dose falloff around the target could be achieved by loosening or abandoning homogeneity. Although there was little additional dose benefit for maximum target dose above 125% of the prescription, dose sparing of normal tissue decreased as the distance from the tumor increased.

Efficacy and safety of radiotherapy for primary liver cancer

Wenqi Chen et al.

Summary: Primary liver cancer, including hepatocellular carcinoma and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, is often not suitable for surgical treatment, but surgical resection, liver transplantation, and radiation therapy are effective options for early-stage cases. Radiation therapy, including techniques like 3DCRT, IMRT, SBRT, VMAT, and internal radiation therapies, is increasingly being used in potentially curative settings for treating advanced liver cancer.
