Mode-locked fiber laser based on a small-period long-period fiber grating inscribed by femtosecond laser

Qianying LI et al.

Summary: We demonstrate stable mode-locked pulses in an Erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) using a femtosecond laser-inscribed small-period long-period grating (SP-LPG). The polarization dependent loss (PDL) of the SP-LPG reaches 20 dB at 1556 nm and 25 dB at 1607 nm, triggering the mode-locking mechanism. The mode-locked fiber laser (MLFL) based on the SP-LPG generates 1.58-ps pulses at 1577 nm with a bandwidth of 4 nm and a repetition rate of 1.54 MHz, showing high stability with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 50 dB. The simple fabrication, compact structure, and high damage threshold of the SP-LPG indicate its various potential applications in ultra-fast laser technologies.

The Impact of Gamma Irradiation on Optical Fibers Identified Using Long Period Gratings

Flavio Esposito et al.

Summary: This paper compares the impact of gamma irradiation on different optical fibers using long period gratings (LPG) to detect the evolution of their optical properties. LPGs were fabricated using the electric arc discharge method on a range of commercially available single-mode optical fibers. The grating response varied depending on the fiber, with the B/Ge fiber showing the highest radiation-dependent resonance wavelength shift and P-doped fiber showing a strong irradiation-induced attenuation.

Investigation of mechanically induced long period grating by 3-D printed periodic grooved plates

Sidrish Zahra et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new technique for fabricating long period gratings (LPGs) by applying mechanical force to an optical fiber enclosed in a low-cost 3D printed polymeric structure. The authors developed a novel interdigitated grating design and studied different periods, obtaining transmission spectra in the 1300-1700 nm wavelength range. The experimental analysis revealed that the resonance wavelengths of the gratings can be adjusted by varying parameters such as applied weight and grating length. The realized LPGs exhibited high tunability, low polarization dependence, negligible insertion losses, and low spectral ripples.

Rapid and sensitive detection of Staphylococcus aureus by using a long-period fiber grating immunosensor coated with egg yolk antibody

Wenbo Gan et al.

Summary: In this study, a stable, compact, label-free and sensitive long-period fiber grating (LPFG) sensor based on egg yolk antibody (IgY) was proposed for the detection of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The sensor showed selectivity and sensitivity to S. aureus measurement, with a detection limit of approximately 33 CFU/ml. The proposed antibody immobilization method is simple and the detection time is fast.

Label-Free Biosensors Based on Long Period Fiber Gratings: A Review

Flavio Esposito et al.

Summary: This paper presents a comprehensive review of the design, development, and testing of label-free biosensors based on in-fiber long period gratings. It focuses on optical transducers and methodologies that enhance sensitivity, as well as coating nanomaterials, bio-functionalization strategies, and recognition elements for selectivity. The aim is to provide an overview of the current state of LPG-based label-free biosensors and highlight future research trends.
