Dual role of soil-derived dissolved organic matter in the sulfamethoxazole oxidation by manganese dioxide

Biwei Yang et al.

Summary: Researchers have found that manganese dioxide (MnO2) can oxidize organic pollutants in aquatic environments, but the presence of dissolved organic matter (DOM) can either inhibit or promote this process. The conflicting results from previous studies have now been resolved, with the type, concentration, and pH of DOM being identified as important factors in the oxidation reaction.

Multiple Roles of Dissolved Organic Matter in Advanced Oxidation Processes

Xin Yang et al.

Summary: Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) can degrade a wide range of trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) in water. However, the dissolved organic matter (DOM) in water can impact the effectiveness of AOPs. DOM can inhibit the degradation of TrOCs, but it can also enhance the formation of useful radicals and alter the transformation pathways of contaminants. Further research is needed to understand how DOM can be used to improve oxidative water purification.

Degradation of Organic Contaminants by Reactive Iron/Manganese Species: Progress and Challenges

Binbin Shao et al.

Summary: Many iron and manganese-based oxidation processes can generate reactive iron/manganese species with selective reactivity towards organic contaminants. However, the reaction mechanisms and occurrence of these species are complicated due to the involvement of multiple radical and nonradical species. This review focuses on the detection methods and roles of these species in the degradation of organic contaminants, as well as the influence of background constituents on the efficiency and byproduct formation of these oxidation processes. The prospects and challenges for future applications are also discussed.

Exposure to trace levels of metals and fluoroquinolones increases inflammation and tumorigenesis risk of zebrafish embryos

Dantong Jia et al.

Summary: Exposure to trace-level heavy metals and antibiotics can lead to metabolic disorder and pathological changes in zebrafish embryos. The study demonstrates that the combination of heavy metals and antibiotics results in oxidative stress, inflammation, and lipid depletion, which is more severe than the effects of individual exposure. Metabolomics and proteomics analyses reveal molecular responses related to oxidative stress, inflammation, and tumor development. This research highlights the potential ecotoxicological risks of trace-level heavy metals and antibiotics in the environment.

Dingxiang Wang et al.

Summary: Fe(VI) has high potential in water treatment due to its high redox potential, showing varying reaction rates and reactive species in acidic conditions. The kinetics of Fe(VI) oxidizing BPA were reexamined over a wide pH range, with high-valent iron species identified as the primary reactive species and HO center dot as the secondary reactive species under acidic conditions. Toxicity assessment suggests that Fe(VI) can efficiently mitigate bioaccumulation toxicity, making it a promising method for BPA abatement in real waters.
