Effect of heteroatoms on structural, electronic and spectroscopic properties of polyfuran, polythiophene and polypyrrole: A hybrid DFT approach

Asma Hassan et al.

Summary: In this paper, a comparative study was conducted on the structural, electronic, and spectroscopic properties of three heterocyclic polymers: polypyrrole, polythiophene, and polyfuran. The effects of heteroatoms (O, N, S) on the properties of these polymers were investigated using quantum chemical calculations. The calculated results showed excellent agreement with experimental data, and the predicted order of attraction among the polymers was polythiophene > polyfuran > polypyrrole based on the optimized geometric parameters and spectroscopic studies.

Efficient ternary active layer materials for organic photovoltaics

Muhammad Adnan et al.

Summary: In recent years, ternary organic solar cells (OSCs) have been considered as a potential candidate in photovoltaic technology for improving power conversion efficiency (PCE). The introduction of ternary components has overcome the limitations of binary-OSCs and provided advantages such as mechanical flexibility, ease of fabrication, lightweight, and combined the benefits of single-junction and tandem solar cells. The insertion of small molecule and non-fullerene acceptors into the binary blend is a promising strategy to fabricate highly efficient ternary OSCs. At present, the PCE has reached 19% and commercialization of OSCs is on track.

Tailoring the solar cell efficiency of Y-series based non-fullerene acceptors through end cap modification

Muniba Iqbal et al.

Summary: In this study, five new acceptors (BTP1-BTP5) were theoretically designed as potential substitutes for fullerene-based acceptors in photovoltaic cells. These newly engineered molecules exhibited a narrower bandgap, better intramolecular charge transfer, and maximum absorption in the red region, indicating their potential for high-efficiency solar cells. Among them, BTP4 showed the most promising properties. The overall theoretical results demonstrated the significant role of these designed non-fullerene acceptors in improving the efficiency of fullerene-free energy devices.

DFT study of transition metals doped calix-4-pyrrole with excellent electronic and non-linear optical properties

Areeba Asif et al.

Summary: A detailed comparative study was conducted on transition metal doped calix-4-pyrrole to determine their optical, electronic, and non-linear optical properties. The study found that doping of transition metals improved the diffused excess electrons, resulting in a lower energy gap. The polarizability and hyperpolarizability of the doped structures also increased significantly. Non-covalent interaction analysis and density of state diagrams showed that the interaction between the cage and dopants was mainly due to intermolecular forces. The study also confirmed the thermodynamical stability of the synthesized complexes through various calculations.
