Ti2+and Ti4+species enriched MXene electrocatalyst for highly efficient hydrogen evolution and oxygen evolution reaction kinetics

Vaishali Sharma et al.

Summary: This study presents a facile approach to enhance the bifunctionality of MXene by growing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on its surface and tuning surface exposed Ti species. The anchored AgNPs modulate the electronic environment of electroactive sites, leading to significantly improved reaction kinetics for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The optimal electrode achieved a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at overpotentials of 0.117 V and 0.25 V for HER and OER, respectively, in 0.5 M H2SO4. TEM and XPS results confirmed the mechanism behind the deteriorated electrochemical performance caused by AgNP agglomeration. Therefore, this work provides a new strategy to explore the surface Ti species of MXene for enhanced electrocatalytic performance.

NiMOF-derived MoSe2@NiSe2 heterostructure with hollow core-shell for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Feng-bo Guo et al.

Summary: Hydrogen production by electrochemical water splitting is an effective method for storing renewable energy. The synthesis of Ni,Mo bimetallic selenide MoSe2@NiSe2 heterojunctions with a hollow core-shell structure using a selenization reaction improves the activity of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The combination of MoSe2 and NiMOF-derived NiSe2 enhances the electron transfer rate and provides more active centers, facilitating the HER catalytic process.

MXene supported nickel-cobalt layered double hydroxide as efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions

Navjyoti et al.

Summary: Developing an inexpensive and noble metal free electrocatalyst is important for renewable energy applications. In this study, MXene supported NiCo LDHs with enlarged surface area and numerous active sites were synthesized and showed superior electrocatalytic activity compared to other samples. The improved activity of NCM-1.2 can be attributed to active redox couples, improved accessible active sites, and reduced interfacial charge transfer resistance.

Modulation of Surface Ti-O Species in 2D-Ti3C2TX MXene for Developing a Highly Efficient Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Evolution and Methanol Oxidation Reactions

Navjyoti et al.

Summary: Developing cost-effective and earth-abundant noble metal-free electrocatalysts is crucial for the upcoming electrochemical society. MXene, a two-dimensional Ti3C2TX material, shows tunable properties with high electrical conductivity and large specific surface area, which enhance its electrochemical performance. By using low temperature annealing method, MXene with a high number of Ti-O termination groups is obtained, resulting in a large electrochemically active surface area and improved electrocatalytic performance. The optimized sample exhibits excellent performance in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with a low overpotential and in methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) with high current density and onset potential, as well as long-term stability and durability.
