Preparation and Quality Evaluation of Honokiol Nanoparticles Using a New Polysaccharide Polymer as its Carrier

Ye Weng et al.

Summary: In this study, Honokiol nanoparticles (HNK-NPs) were prepared using a biodegradable polysaccharide polymer as a carrier to enhance the solubility of Honokiol (HNK). The HNK-NPs were prepared through hydrophilic polymer coagulation method and optimized based on particle size and polydispersity index. The optimized nanoparticles exhibited spherical-like morphology with a mean particle size of 198.50 +/- 0.01 nm and a Zeta potential of -52.60 +/- 1.00 mV. The in vitro release study showed stable release behavior with cumulative release rates of 48.28 +/- 9.80% and 81.12 +/- 4.35% within 2 h and 8 h, respectively. The HNK-NPs solution prepared by the hydrophilic polymer condensation method showed no significant change in particle size and polydispersity index at 72h. The results indicate that the developed HNK-NPs can be a promising strategy to improve the solubility of HNK.

Polysialic acid-functionalized liposomes for efficient honokiol delivery to inhibit breast cancer growth and metastasis

Xin Li et al.

Summary: To enhance the anti-metastasis effects of honokiol (HNK) on breast cancer, researchers designed cationic liposomes encapsulating HNK and modified their surface with negatively charged polysialic acid (PSA-Lip-HNK). In vitro experiments showed that PSA-Lip-HNK increased cellular uptake and cytotoxicity through the endocytosis pathway mediated by PSA and selectin receptors. In vivo experiments on tumor-bearing mice demonstrated that PSA-Lip-HNK effectively inhibited tumor growth and metastasis. Therefore, PSA-Lip-HNK provides a promising drug delivery approach for metastatic breast cancer therapy.
