Screening of single transition metal substitution in two-dimensional Mo2CTx MXene electrocatalyst with ultrahigh activity for oxygen reduction reaction

Xin Chen et al.

Summary: In this work, the activity of transition metal substituted Mo2CTx for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is investigated. It is found that TM-Mo2CTx has the potential for catalyzing ORR after the substitution of TM. Three TM-Mo2CTx catalysts, Mn-, Fe-, and Ni-Mo2CTx, exhibit ultrahigh ORR activity and outperform Pt(111) and other reported ORR catalysts. The origin of the ultrahigh ORR activity of Mn-Mo2CTx is revealed by analyzing the electronic structure. This study demonstrates that incorporating transition metals into Mo2CTx lattice is an effective strategy to enhance its ORR performance and provides guidance for the design of this novel MXene electrocatalyst.

A High-Throughput Screening toward Efficient Nitrogen Fixation: Transition Metal Single-Atom Catalysts Anchored on an Emerging π-π Conjugated Graphitic Carbon Nitride (g-C10N3) Substrate with Dirac Dispersion

Qiang Zhang et al.

Summary: TM-Nx is a promising catalyst for green ammonia synthesis, leading to increased interest in single-atom catalysts for nitrogen fixation. In this study, a holey graphitic carbon-nitride skeleton was constructed, which provides excellent electrical conductivity for high-efficiency nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). The calculations showed that tungsten embedded in the graphitic carbon-nitride substrate exhibited optimal NRR behavior, with a suppressed hydrogen evolution reaction and low energy cost. Overall, this research provides valuable insights for the design of efficient catalysts for nitrogen fixation.

Enhancing catalytic properties of noble metal@MoS2/WS2 heterojunction for the hydrogen evolution reaction

Shuang Chen et al.

Summary: Transition metal disulfides, such as MoS2 and WS2, have the potential to be efficient catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction. However, their practical application is hindered by issues like inert basic plane and low electrical conductivity. To overcome these limitations, we have constructed a heterojunction of MoS2/WS2 and doped it with transition metal elements (Pt and Pd). Our results show that the Pt-doped heterojunction (Pt@MoS2/Pt@WS2) exhibits high catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution, with a low energy barrier. This enhanced performance can be attributed to the unique heterostructure, narrowed band gap, new impurity levels, and charge distribution characteristics of the heterojunction.

A Universal Descriptor for Complicated Interfacial Effects on Electrochemical Reduction Reactions

Chunjin Ren et al.

Summary: In this study, a simple and universal descriptor based on inherent atomic properties was proposed for evaluating the complicated interfacial effects on electrochemical reduction reactions. The activity and selectivity trends in CO2 reduction reaction were successfully elucidated, and several potential catalysts with superior activity and selectivity were predicted. Furthermore, the descriptor was also extended to evaluate the activity of dual-atom catalysts for O-2 and N-2 reduction reactions.

p-Block element-doped silicon nanowires for nitrogen reduction reaction: a DFT study

Zhongyuan Guo et al.

Summary: This study proposes doping SiNWs with p-block elements (B, C, P) to tune their affinity to N-2, and shows that two-coordinated boron (B-2C) offers an ultra-low overpotential (eta = 0.34 V) for catalyzing full NRR, even lower than that of the benchmark Ru(0001) catalysts (eta = 0.92 V). Additionally, factors such as suppressed hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), high-spin ground state of the B-2C site, and decreased band gap after B-doping contribute to high selectivity and photocatalytic activity.
