Summary: Assessing vegetation restoration prospects (VRPs) is crucial for ecological restoration projects, especially in cold and arid mountainous areas. This study focused on the Qilian Mountains and analyzed the relationship between vegetation trend persistence and VRPs. A VRPs assessment framework was constructed, and environmental factors influencing vegetation restoration were identified. The results showed significant vegetation improvement in the Qilian Mountains, with specific environmental elements such as terrain niche index, drought index, and soil types influencing VRPs. The study provides a new framework for assessing VRPs and offers guidance for ecosystem restoration planning worldwide.

Summary: Clarifying the spatiotemporal variation of crop irrigation water requirement is essential for water resource management and adjusting the planting structure. This study investigated the variations of climatic factors and irrigation water requirement of grain crops in Northwest China and explored the driving factors. Results showed spatial heterogeneity in irrigation water requirement and the influence of climatic factors differed among regions. Effective precipitation was the most influential factor for all grain crops in most areas. Effective water-saving measures are urgent to cope with climate change and ensure food security.

Summary: This study analyzed the impacts of ecological restoration on water resources in the Kubuqi Desert and found that while vegetation restoration contributed significantly to increased evapotranspiration, the precipitation could not meet the water demand, leading to reliance on groundwater and river diversion. Future ecological restoration efforts should prioritize water-efficient species and carefully consider the water consumption cost.

Summary: The Grain to Green Programme has improved vegetation growth in the Chinese Loess Plateau. Precipitation, sunshine duration, humidity, radiation, and vegetation type are the main factors affecting the spatial distribution of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) in the area. Human activities have a dominant influence on NDVI variations. The study also found a risk of vegetation degradation in the region.

Summary: This study analyzed the response of vegetation to climate change and human activities in the Qilian Mountains from 1982 to 2020. The results showed an increasing trend in vegetation index in the region, with higher values in the southeast. The distribution of degraded areas shifted southwards. The sustainability of vegetation cover was challenged, with a large area of uncertainty in the future. Temperature played a dominant role in vegetation growth.

Summary: This study monitored the spatiotemporal patterns of vegetation cover in the Mu Us Sandy Land between 2000 and 2019 using NDVI data, revealing significant improvement in vegetation cover in the eastern and southeastern regions. The overall trend of vegetation improvement was spatially consistent, with high coverage in the east and south, and low coverage in central and western regions. The study also found a correlation between NDVI and precipitation, as well as NDVI and temperature, with precipitation having a stronger positive correlation across 99% of the Sandy Land. Additionally, human activities contributed 62.68% to vegetation improvement, while climate change contributed 37.32%.

Summary: Distinguishing the contributions of climate change and human activities to vegetation dynamics is crucial for sustainable environmental management. This study used the residual trend method to quantify the relative contributions of human activities and climate change to vegetation trends in China from 1988 to 2018. The results showed that human activities played a major role in the increase of NDVI and GPP, while the dynamics of VOD were influenced by a balance of human activities and climate change. The relative roles of climate and human factors varied across different regions.

Summary: The study investigated the impacts of climate change and human activities on vegetation dynamics in mainland China, with the finding that land use changes have a greater influence on vegetation changes than temperature and precipitation changes. Activities such as planting trees and returning farmlands to forests have increased the coverage of grasses and mixed forests, while cultivated vegetation has decreased. The improved residual trend method was shown to reduce uncertainty in quantifying the effects of climate and anthropogenic factors on vegetation dynamics, providing a theoretical basis and tool for future ecological management strategies by the government.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between vegetation and climate change in the Mu Us Desert from 2000 to 2019, finding that NDVI during the growing season increased by 0.0058 per year. The results showed that precipitation, temperature, and relative humidity had a significant positive correlation with NDVI, while mean wind speed and sunshine hours had a significant negative correlation. Stepwise multiple linear regression analysis indicated that climatic factors and afforestation contributed 41.9% and 58.1% to NDVI change, respectively, across the study area.
