Uncovering the impact of income inequality and population aging on carbon emission efficiency: An empirical analysis of 139 countries

Qiang Wang et al.

Summary: Income inequality and carbon emission efficiency are crucial factors in achieving UN sustainable development goals. However, research on the relationship between these two factors has been lacking. This study uses panel data from 139 countries between 1998 and 2018 to explore how income inequality affects carbon emission efficiency, considering the influence of aging and economic growth. The results indicate that income inequality inhibits the improvement of carbon emission efficiency and that the relationship between income inequality and carbon emission efficiency is influenced by aging and economic growth, showing U-shaped and inverted U-shaped patterns respectively. Policy recommendations are provided based on the changes in spatial and temporal distributions.

Analysis of urban carbon emission efficiency and influencing factors in the Yellow River Basin

Weifeng Gong et al.

Summary: This study calculates the carbon emission efficiency of 98 cities in the Yellow River Basin and analyzes the spatial effects of influencing factors, drawing several important conclusions. The carbon emission efficiency of cities in the Yellow River Basin varies, with only a small number of cities reaching an effective state. Technological progress is the main factor driving the overall improvement of carbon emission efficiency in the basin, while the factors affecting carbon emission efficiency in different cities vary. Economic development level and industrial structure upgrading have significant positive effects on carbon emission efficiency, while technological development level, energy intensity, and opening up have significant negative effects, and population density has a positive indirect effect on carbon emission efficiency.

How does heterogeneous environmental regulation affect net carbon emissions: Spatial and threshold analysis for China

Xiaoling Huang et al.

Summary: The Chinese government has made great efforts and implemented strict regulation policies to reduce air pollutants. Recent studies suggest that these environmental regulations may also contribute to reducing carbon emissions. This paper uses the spatial Durbin model and panel threshold model to investigate the effects of different environmental regulations on carbon emissions reduction based on provincial panel data in China. The findings show that China's net carbon emissions display spatial agglomeration characteristics and that formal and informal environmental regulations have inverted U-shaped impacts on net carbon emissions. The study also reveals that the carbon-reducing effect of environmental regulation becomes more prominent with the improvement of regional technological innovation levels.

Carbon Emission Efficiency and Low-Carbon Optimization in Shanxi Province under Dual Carbon Background

Xiaojia Guo et al.

Summary: Shanxi Province, an important energy base in China, heavily relies on coal resources for its economic development, resulting in significant carbon dioxide emissions and ecological problems. This paper utilized the SBM-DEA model and Malmquist index to assess the energy consumption and carbon emission efficiency of 11 prefecture-level cities in Shanxi from 2000 to 2020. The findings revealed variations in carbon emission efficiencies among the cities, with Taiyuan and Shuozhou exhibiting higher technical efficiency, technological progress, and total factor productivity compared to others. Although the carbon emission rate in Shanxi has slowed down, challenges such as a large total emission base, high carbon emission intensity, and low unit carbon emission efficiency persist. The industrial structure plays a vital role in hindering improvements in carbon emission efficiency. The study also observed a gradual dispersion and enhancement of carbon emission efficiency from the central and northern regions to the southern regions of Shanxi Province during the period. To attain a low-carbon economy, Shanxi Province needs to optimize its industrial structure, expedite research and development in low-carbon technologies, adjust its energy structure, and promote the establishment of an energy supply system centered around clean low-carbon energy sources.
