Achieving White-Light Emission Using Organic Persistent Room Temperature Phosphorescence

Zhu Wu et al.

Summary: Artificial lighting accounts for about one-fifth of global electricity production. Organic emitters with white persistent RTP have potential in energy-efficient lighting technologies due to their ability to harvest both singlet and triplet excitons. Compared to heavy metal phosphorescent materials, they offer advantages in terms of cost, processability, and reduced toxicity. This review summarizes recent advances in purely organic RTP materials for white-light emission and introduces white phosphorescent carbon dots and representative applications.

Polymerization-Induced Crystallization of Dopant Molecules: An Efficient Strategy for Room-Temperature Phosphorescence of Hydrogels

Huaqiang Ju et al.

Summary: We propose a facile strategy to achieve room-temperature phosphorescence in conventional hydrogels by polymerization-induced crystallization of dopant molecules, leading to clusterization-induced phosphorescence. Crown ethers dissolved in a concentrated acrylamide aqueous solution crystallize during polymerization to form large spherulites in the hydrogel, resulting in carbonyl clusters and phosphorescence emission. This strategy is universally applicable to hydrogels with different polymeric matrices and dopant molecules. The development of hydrogels with mechanical and phosphorescent properties holds great potential in the biomedical and engineering fields.

Substrate-Responsive Pillar[5]arene-Based Organic Room-Temperature Phosphorescence

Huangtianzhi Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, a room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) system responsive to alkyl halides was described. The system consisted of a meta-formylphenyl-bearing pillar[5]arene derivative that supported effective through-space charge transfer. Treatment with bromoethane enhanced the emission. An isomeric para-formylphenyl-bearing pillar[5]arene system proved ineffective in producing an RTP effect.

The doping of phenoxazine (PXZ) and 10-ethyl-10H-phenoxazine (PXZEt) into epoxy polymers results in unique photoactivated UOP properties. The doped films also exhibit outstanding water and chemical resistance. The PXZ@EP-0.25% has been successfully used as an erasable transparent film for light printing.

Host-Guest Doping in Flexible Organic Crystals for Room-Temperature Phosphorescence

Yang Xia et al.

Summary: This study proposes a host-guest doping strategy to achieve both room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and flexibility in organic single crystals (OSCs). The flexible OSCs exhibit bright deep-red phosphorescence upon external force application and can return to their original shape after stress removal. The results suggest that the bright RTP is due to Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) from the triphenylene molecules to the dopants. This strategy provides a simple and universal approach for the preparation of flexible OSCs with RTP.

Metal-Free Organic Phosphors toward Fast and Efficient Room-Temperature Phosphorescence

Wenhao Shao et al.

Summary: This Account summarizes important molecular design and matrix engineering strategies to tackle the challenges of low SOC efficiency and nonradiative decay in purely organic phosphors (POPs). SOC is mostly promoted by heavy atom effects and the El-Sayed rule, while engineering the matrices of POPs is critical to effectively suppress nonradiative decay. Future research can focus on molecular design descriptors, such as heavy atom oriented orbital angular momentum manipulation, to further enhance SOC efficiency in purely organic materials.

Long-Lived Organic Room-Temperature Phosphorescence fromAmorphous Polymer Systems

Jingjing Guo et al.

Summary: Long-lived organic room-temperature phosphorescence materials have great potential applications in various fields. Compared to traditional fluorescence, phosphorescence originates from slow radiative transitions of triplet excitons. Enhancing intersystem crossing rate and suppressing nonradiative relaxation channels can achieve efficient phosphorescence in purely organic materials. Amorphous organic polymers offer improved processability and flexibility, making them more competitive for achieving long-lived phosphorescence emission.

Tailoring Noncovalent Interactions to Activate Persistent Room-Temperature Phosphorescence from Doped Polyacrylonitrile Films

Hongzhuo Wu et al.

Summary: This study presents a rational strategy to activate wide-color ranged and persistent room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) from amorphous films by embedding electron-rich organic phosphors into an electron-deficient matrix polyacrylonitrile (PAN). The ultralong lifetime of 968.1 ms was obtained for the doped film TBB-6OMe@PAN through tailoring noncovalent interactions between the electron-deficient PAN matrix and electron-rich organic phosphors, indicating the activation of persistent RTP may be triggered by strong electrostatic interactions between the two components. Further theoretical calculations demonstrated that both electrostatic and dispersion interactions are responsible for the activation of persistent RTP in the doped films, with the doped film also showing excellent water resistance after 12 weeks.
