Self-sorting assembly of artificial building blocks

Qianwei Liu et al.

Summary: Self-assembly is a common phenomenon in living systems, and scientists have been trying to emulate its intricacy, homogeneity, and versatility in artificial building blocks. Self-sorting assembly in multicomponent systems allows for the spontaneous recognition and spatial aggregation of the same or interactive building units, leading to well-ordered products or hierarchical structures in a one-step manner. This efficient assembly strategy has attracted significant research attention, particularly in artificial systems using supramolecular and polymeric building blocks.

High-Throughput Preparation of Supramolecular Nanostructures on Metal Surfaces

Jiayi Lu et al.

Summary: One of the contemporary challenges in materials science is the rapid screening and discovery of materials. High-throughput parallel synthesis can generate experimental sample libraries to facilitate quick material discoveries. Molecular self-assembly on surfaces has proved to be a useful method for constructing nanostructures with interesting properties or topologies. However, high-throughput preparations of supramolecular surface nanostructures have been less explored.

Preparation, Supramolecular Organization, and On-Surface Reactivity of Enantiopure Subphthalocyanines: From Bulk to 2D-Polymerization

Jorge Labella et al.

Summary: In this study, enantiopure subphthalocyanines (SubPcs) were synthesized and shown to have potential in chiral technologies. Enantiopure SubPcs were found to exhibit unique columnar polar assemblies in solid state and highly ordered chiral superstructures on metal surfaces. Density functional theory calculations revealed a bowl-to-bowl inversion behavior in SubPcs.

Packing Biomolecules into Sierpinski Triangles with Global Organizational Chirality

Chao Li et al.

Summary: The study successfully constructed a series of Sierpinski triangles with global organizational chirality through the coassembly of L-tryptophan and 1,3-bi(4-pyridyl)benzene molecules on Ag(111), with the chirality changing when L-tryptophan is replaced by D-tryptophan. Density functional theory calculations revealed that intermolecular hydrogen bonds stabilize the Sierpinski triangles at the single-molecule level.

Chirality of molecular nanostructures on surfaces via molecular assembly and reaction: manifestation and control

Ying Xu et al.

Summary: This article provides a survey of recent advances in chiral expression and control in molecular assemblies and reactions on surfaces. The focus is on the induction and control of chirality in molecular assemblies, as well as the study of chirality expressed in on-surface synthesis and the methods to steer the stereoselectivity of on-surface reactions. The future outlook in this field is also discussed.
