Fracture surface topography investigation and fatigue life assessment of notched austenitic steel specimens

Wojciech Macek et al.

Summary: The study investigates the fracture surface topography of X8CrNiS18-9 austenitic stainless-steel specimens for different loadings and notch radii, aiming to supplement the knowledge about fracture mechanisms for fatigue performance. A fracture surface topography fatigue damage model is proposed based on the correlation between stress amplitude and fracture topography characteristics. The predictions are close to the experimental results.

Fatigue life enhancement of foreign object impacted railway axle EA4T steel with surface shot peening

Yan Luo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of surface reinforcement and foreign object damage on the fatigue property of alloy steel used for high-speed railway axles. The results show that surface reinforcing can effectively enhance fatigue resistance, and stress concentration, residual stress, microdamage, and microstructure are the main fatigue failure mechanisms of axles subject to foreign object damage.

Experimental study and residual fatigue life assessment of corroded high-tensile steel wires using 3D scanning technology

Guodong Wang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effects of corrosion on the residual fatigue life of steel wires in bridge suspenders, proposing a predictive model and verifying it through fatigue loading tests and experimental observation. The relationship between corrosion degree and fatigue life of the steel wires is established based on the findings from the experiments and literature review.

A fractographic study exploring the fracture surface topography of S355J2 steel after pseudo-random bending-torsion fatigue tests

W. Macek et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the influence of multiaxial loading and fatigue behavior on a fracture surface, using a high-resolution 3D profilometer for surface measurement and analysis. The quantitative description of surface roughness of the fracture surface was done through Sa and Df parameters. Shear stress contribution, loading conditions, and fatigue life were found to have an impact on fracture surface parameters. Advanced topography application method was found to be useful as both a measurement methodology and an innovative method for surface evaluation.
