Quantitative evaluation of brain iron accumulation in different stages of Parkinson's disease

Kailyn R. Li et al.

Summary: This study evaluated brain iron accumulation in PD patients using QSM, finding that iron accumulation occurs early in the disease course and is primarily concentrated in the substantia nigra (SN) and red nucleus (RN). Further prospective studies are needed to validate QSM as a method to track brain iron, potentially serving as a disease biomarker and a therapeutic target.

Psychometric methods for diagnosing and monitoring minimal hepatic encephalopathy -current validation level and practical use

Mads Kingo Guldberg Hansen et al.

Summary: Hepatic encephalopathy is a cerebral dysfunction caused by liver failure and has a significant impact on the quality of life of patients with liver cirrhosis. Minimal hepatic encephalopathy, which cannot be clinically detected, can be improved through detection and treatment, thus preventing the development of clinically manifest hepatic encephalopathy. This review provides an overview of the validation level and usage of psychometric tests used to detect minimal hepatic encephalopathy.

Metabolic syndrome is associated with poor response to rifaximin in minimal hepatic encephalopathy

Maria-Pilar Ballester et al.

Summary: Patients with metabolic syndrome features have poor response to rifaximin for minimal hepatic encephalopathy, with a higher proportion of neurological alterations associated with a pro-inflammatory environment.

Role of ammonia for brain abnormal protein glycosylation during the development of hepatitis B virus-related liver diseases

Jiajun Yang et al.

Summary: The study identified the upregulation of Gal beta 1-3GalNAc mediated by C1GALT1 as a result of ammonia stimulation in HBV transgenic mice. In vitro assays validated that upregulation of C1GALT1 drives the overexpression of IP3R1, leading to calcium homeostasis deregulation. C1GALT1 and IP3R1 may serve as therapeutic targets in hyperammonemia of HE.

Iron and Alzheimer's Disease: From Pathology to Imaging

Dean Tran et al.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease is a debilitating brain disorder with no effective treatment. The accumulation of beta-amyloid and tau proteins are key markers for the disease, but the exact mechanisms behind neurodegeneration in AD are still not well understood. Abnormal iron accumulation may play a role in the pathogenesis of AD, and further research is needed to develop iron-based biomarkers or therapeutic targets.

Iron, Neuroinflammation and Neurodegeneration

Roberta J. Ward et al.

Summary: Disturbance of brain homeostasis leads to inflammation and cell death. Inflammation and iron metabolism interact, leading to iron deposition in brain cells. Reactive oxygen and nitrogen species play a role in inflammation and iron metabolism. Mechanisms to regulate iron homeostasis are important, and therapeutic approaches include N-acetyl cysteine, anti-inflammatory compounds, and iron chelation.

Summary: The study found that in patients without a history of overt hepatic encephalopathy, neuropsychological and neurophysiological tests can predict the occurrence of hepatic encephalopathy, while in patients with a history of overt hepatic encephalopathy, the severity of liver dysfunction plays a larger role in the development of hepatic encephalopathy.
