Effect of surface damage induced by cavitation erosion on pitting and passive behaviors of 304L stainless steel

Liang Li et al.

Summary: The corrosion behavior of 304L stainless steel in 3.5wt% NaCl solution after different cavitation erosion times was evaluated using electrochemical noise and potentiostatic polarization techniques. The passivation and depassivation of 304L SS had significant distinctions at different cavitation erosion periods. During the incubation period, passivation behavior was predominant with metastable pitting initiation. Over the rising period, the transition from passivation to depassivation occurred, leading to massive growth of metastable and stable pitting. Serious localized corrosion occurred during the stable period of depassivation.

Effects of cavitation erosion-induced surface damage on the corrosion behaviour of TA31 Ti alloy

Liang Li et al.

Summary: This study utilized electrochemical noise technology to investigate the influence of surface damage induced by cavitation erosion (CE) on the pitting and passivation behaviors of TA31 Ti alloy. The results showed that TA31 Ti alloy had high corrosion resistance in NaCl solutions. However, the passivation ability was reduced due to the residual tensile stress layer formed during grinding and polishing. After 1 hour of CE, the residual tensile stress layer was eliminated and the passivation ability improved, leading to the initiation of pitting corrosion on the material surface. Increasing the CE time from 1 hour to 2 hours gradually decreased the passivation ability of the alloy, promoting the transition from pitting initiation to metastable pitting growth. However, with CE time increasing from 2 hours to 6 hours, the damage mechanism of uniform thinning increased the passivation ability and stability of the alloy.

Effect of aging treatment on microstructure and corrosion behavior of a Fe-18Cr-15Mn-0.66N stainless steel

Yanxin Qiao et al.

Summary: The effect of aging treatment on the microstructure and corrosion behavior of a high-nitrogen stainless steel (HNSS) was investigated. The aging treatment led to the precipitation of Cr2N particles along the grain boundaries, and the morphology changed from dispersive particles to a continuous network. Aging time had minor effects on corrosion potential and corrosion current density, but resulted in a sharp decrease in the pitting corrosion potential. The passive film behaved as a n-type semiconductor, and the donor density of the passive film increased with aging time. However, the fraction of stable oxide (Cr2O3) in the passive film decreased with aging time. The aging treatment weakened the corrosion resistance of HNSS by deteriorating the protectiveness of the passive film.

Summary: A direct comparison was made between the microstructure and tensile properties of Inconel 718 fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) or laser metal deposition (LMD). LMD-fabricated specimens showed lower tensile yield strength and fracture elongation in the as-built state due to the coarser solidification microstructure. However, both SLM- and LMD-fabricated specimens exhibited significant enhancement in yield strength after the same heat treatment. Notably, LMD-fabricated specimens showed improvement in both strength and ductility.

Role of interfacial energy anisotropy in dendrite orientation in Al-Zn alloys: A phase field study

Yuhong Zhao et al.

Summary: The influence of interfacial energy anisotropy on dendrite morphology was investigated in Al-Zn alloys using the phase-field method. Different types of dendrite morphology were observed, and the occurrence of solute segregation holes and liquid grooves in dendrites was found to be influenced by the anisotropic interfacial energy. Supersaturation was found to be strongly correlated with the formation of liquid holes and liquid grooves as well as the degree of solute segregation. The relationship between interfacial energy anisotropy, Zn concentration, elastic anisotropy, and dendrite orientation deserves attention.

Cooperative effect of strength and ductility processed by thermomechanical treatment for Cu-Al-Ni alloy

Xiaolin Tian et al.

Summary: This work investigates the strength-ductility cooperative effect of Cu-Al-Ni alloys through thermomechanical treatment. The results show that high strain rate induces the introduction of dislocations and twin structures, and high strength can be achieved at a slightly lower temperature than the elongation peak. The optimization of strength-ductility mainly involves twining/grain boundaries optimization and second-phases optimization, which contribute together without conflict. The interaction between twins and dislocations is dynamically displayed using a phase-field-crystal method. The typical characteristics of high strength-ductility copper alloys include small grain size, high twin density, and stable grain boundary.
