Summary: The potential of a one-stage hydrothermal process in using water as an extraction medium for the simultaneous extraction of pectin and phenols from Citrus limetta peels was investigated. The optimal conditions for the highest extraction yield of pectin and phenol were determined. The obtained pectin exhibited comparable physicochemical and thermal properties to commercial pectin. The phenolic extract showed higher antioxidant activity and contained various identified flavonoids. These results suggest the suitability of the hydrothermal process as a green extraction method for co-extracting pectin and phenols from Citrus limetta peels.

Microwave-assisted valorization and characterization of Citrus limetta peel waste into pectin as a perspective food additive

Development and characterization of novel packaging films from composite mixtures of rice-starch, tara gum and pectin

Novel active edible food packaging films based entirely on citrus peel wastes

Antioxidant and antimicrobial packaging films developed based on the peel powder of different citrus fruits: A comparative study

Summary: Citrus peels contain valuable biopolymers and bioactive substances, which can be used to develop food packaging films. In this study, active packaging films were prepared from citrus peel powder of four different citrus fruits. These films exhibited rough surface and transverse with yellow or flesh color. They had suitable structural and functional properties, such as moisture content, water contact angle, water vapor permeability, oxygen permeability, tensile strength, elongation at break, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. Among the films, mandarin peel powder based film showed the highest effectiveness in retarding corn oil oxidation.

Structural characteristics and gel properties of pectin from citrus physiological premature fruit drop

Summary: This study extracted and characterized pectin from citrus physiological premature fruit drop for the first time. The pectin yield was 4.4% using acid hydrolysis. The CPDP was found to be low-methoxylated pectin (LMP) with a DM of 15.27%. CPDP showed a highly branched macromolecular polysaccharide structure with a rich rhamnogalacturonan I domain and long arabinose and galactose side chains. Ca2+ was used to induce the formation of gels with CPDP, which showed higher gel strength and storage modulus compared to commercial citrus pectin.

Sustainable bioactive pectin-based films to improve fruit safety via a circular economy approach

Effect of branched polyethyleneimine and citric acid on the structural, physical and antibacterial properties of corn starch/chitosan films

Summary: To effectively improve the antibacterial and physical properties of corn starch/chitosan films, starch/chitosan/polyethyleneimine (PEI) blend films crosslinked by citric acid were prepared. It was found that the addition of 3.75% PEI improved the tensile strength and elongation at break, but decreased the thermal stability. Incorporation of citric acid significantly enhanced the tensile strength and thermal stability of the films. Strong interactions were observed among citric acid, PEI, and starch-chitosan. All films showed inhibitory effects on E. coli and S. aureus, with the film containing 3.75% PEI and 5.0% citric acid having the best overall properties.

Soluble soybean polysaccharide/gelatin active edible films incorporated with curcumin for oil packaging

Summary: An edible film based on soluble soybean polysaccharide (SSPS) and gelatin incorporating curcumin was developed as active packaging material for soybean oil. Curcumin improved the structural and physical properties of the SSPS/gelatin films, and showed antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. The film dissolved quickly in hot water and effectively delayed the oxidation of soybean oil.

Characterization of Pectin Oligosaccharides Obtained from Citrus Peel Pectin

Summary: This study aimed to characterize the pectic oligosaccharides (POSs) obtained from enzymatic hydrolysis of citrus peel pectin. Pectinex Ultra AFP enzyme was used for the depolymerization of citrus peel pectin into POSs. POSs were analyzed using HPLC and LC/MS to determine monosaccharide composition and average molar mass distribution. The identified fractions consisted mainly of neutral sugars (rhamnose, glucose, and galactose) and acidic sugars (galacturonic acid), with mole percentages of 8.67%, 10.28%, 74.33%, and 6.72%, respectively. The DP ranged from DP3 to DP8, indicating a high degree of enzymatic hydrolysis of pectin to pectic POSs.

Study on the relationship between primary structure/ spatial conformation and gel properties of pectins from different varieties

A method for gel grade determination and application evaluation of two citrus pectins

The commercial application related qualities of two citrus pectins were also studied in detail. The results showed that the yields and gel grades of the pectins were in line with commodity standards, and the Changshanhuyou pectin exhibited better performance compared with commercial pectin in stabilizing acidified milk drink.

Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is a promising candidate due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, and wide availability. However, CMC-based films have limited mechanical properties, which hinder their widespread application. This study explores the molecular interactions between CMC and various additives with different molecular structures to improve the mechanical properties of CMC-based films. Rheological properties of film-forming solutions were investigated to understand the influencing mechanisms of the additives. The results showed that the interactions between CMC and the additives depended on their charge, and various systems were selected to prepare films with desirable characteristics.

Adding 0.2 wt% of zeolite Y into citrus high methylated pectin matrix significantly improved the tensile strength, thermal stability, and water vapor barrier of the films. In addition, the sealed strawberries in the film maintained better color and appearance after storage.

Comparison of characterization and antioxidant activity of different citrus peel pectins

pH-responsive cellulose nanomaterial films containing anthocyanins for intelligent and active food packaging

Summary: In this study, a pH-sensitive packaging film was prepared by immobilizing anthocyanins in red cabbage extract (RCE) on a sustainable substrate made of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and nano-fibrillated cellulose (NFC).
