Phylogenetically and functionally diverse species mixes beget diverse experimental prairies, whether from seeds or plugs

Rebecca S. Barak et al.

Summary: Phylogenetic and functional diversity are important for restoration planning, and our study found that diverse species mixes tend to produce diverse restored plant communities. There were no significant differences in phylogenetic and functional diversity between seed and plug planting methods. Seeding is more cost-effective, but both methods achieved similar biodiversity outcomes.

Evolutionary history shapes grassland productivity through opposing effects on complementarity and selection

Daniel J. Larkin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of the evolutionary history of organisms (PD) on ecosystem function and finds that PD, independent of species richness and functional trait diversity (FD), has significant effects on grassland primary productivity. The results show that higher PD increases complementarity but decreases selection effects. Furthermore, PD shapes productivity through clade-level effects on functional traits associated with specific plant families. These findings highlight the importance of considering the phylogenetic dimensions of biodiversity in ecological research and conservation.

Dominant species establishment may influence invasion resistance more than phylogenetic or functional diversity

Adrienne R. Ernst et al.

Summary: Phylogenetic and functional diversity may not necessarily enhance invasion resistance, as higher phylogenetic diversity was associated with increased invader abundance. However, higher abundance of dominant plant families can reduce invader biomass. Hierarchical trait differences also play a role in shaping invasion dynamics.

Mapping species richness of plant families in European vegetation

Martin Vecera et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the representation of vascular plant families within different vegetation formations across Europe. Through analyzing data from 816,005 vegetation plots, distinct spatial patterns for many families in forests, grasslands, scrub, and wetlands were identified. These findings can inspire further biogeographical and macroecological studies and contribute to a better understanding of the evolutionary history of plant families.
