Large-scale snake genome analyses provide insights into vertebrate development

Changjun Peng et al.

Summary: By analyzing 14 newly assembled genomes, we investigated the genetic basis of snake phenotypes and conducted functional experiments to understand their morphological characteristics. We identified genes, regulatory elements, and structural variations that have potentially contributed to the evolution of snakes, such as limb loss, elongated body plan, asymmetrical lungs, sensory systems, and digestive adaptations. We also found genes and regulatory elements that might have shaped the evolution of vision, skeletal system and diet in blind snakes, and thermoreception in infrared-sensitive snakes. Our study provides new insights into the evolution and development of snakes and vertebrates.

Appendage-Bearing Sordariomycetes from Dipterocarpus alatus Leaf Litter in Thailand

Nethmini P. Samaradiwakara et al.

Summary: Leaf litter is important in forest ecosystems, providing organic matter, protecting forest soils, and serving as a habitat for micro-organisms. This study focuses on identifying and classifying four saprobic fungal taxa found in Dipterocarpus alatus leaf litter in northern Thailand. New species and host records are introduced, and detailed descriptions, micrographs, and phylogenetic trees are provided.

Phylogenomics and diversification of Sordariomycetes

Y. P. Chen et al.

Summary: The Sordariomycetes is a diverse and widely distributed class of fungi that plays important ecological roles and produces various chemically diverse metabolites. Despite recent progress in understanding the relationships within Sordariomycetes, there are still unresolved groups and inconsistent taxonomy. In this study, a comprehensive phylogenetic analysis based on genomic data is conducted, resulting in a well-resolved phylogenomic tree and proposing a new taxonomic framework for the class.

Taxonomy, phylogeny, molecular dating and ancestral state reconstruction of Xylariomycetidae (Sordariomycetes)

Milan C. Samarakoon et al.

Summary: This research focused on inconspicuous stromatic xylarialean taxa from several countries and identified 39 new taxa, including a new family, five new genera, 27 new species, and seven new host/geographical records. The analysis suggests that stromatic variations mostly occurred during the Cretaceous period.

Forecasting the number of species of asexually reproducing fungi (Ascomycota and Basidiomycota)

Nalin N. Wijayawardene et al.

Summary: Asexually reproducing fungi play significant roles in ecosystems and have implications for plant and animal health, food production, biotechnology, and medicine. However, the diversity and extent of asexually reproducing taxa are not well-known. Recent reports suggest that there may be more asexual fungi than sexually-reproducing ones. Evaluating the diversity of different types of fungi, such as speciose and pleomorphic taxa, as well as those from less studied life modes and biodiversity-rich areas, is necessary to obtain more reliable estimates.

Modeling Pulsed Evolution and Time-Independent Variation Improves the Confidence Level of Ancestral and Hidden State Predictions

Yingnan Gao et al.

Summary: Ancestral state reconstruction is a fundamental tool for studying trait evolution and predicting unknown trait values. The commonly used Brownian motion model fails to capture the complexity of trait evolution and provides unreliable predictions. The newly developed RasperGade method outperforms other methods in providing reliable confidence estimates and is faster.

Flora and Vegetation of Yunnan, Southwestern China: Diversity, Origin and Evolution

Hua Zhu et al.

Summary: Yunnan's complicated geological history, unique geography, and diverse topography have led to the formation of various habitats with high levels of biodiversity. The local flora and vegetation have been shaped by a combination of tropical and subtropical distributions, as well as specific geological events such as uplifts and rotations. The formation of different plant formations in Yunnan is also influenced by its position in relation to other geological blocks.

Summary: This paper presents an updated classification of the Kingdom Fungi, including fungus-like taxa and fossil fungi. It provides detailed notes for newly introduced taxa and changes made since the previous outline. The paper discusses the latest taxonomic changes in Basidiomycota and broadly explores the classification of Mycosphaerellales. It also discusses problematic genera in Glomeromycota based on phylogenetic analysis.

Antiviral Bioactive Compounds of Mushrooms and Their Antiviral Mechanisms: A Review

Dong Joo Seo et al.

Summary: Bioactive compounds derived from mushrooms show antiviral activity against DNA and RNA viruses, particularly herpes simplex virus, influenza virus, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Some mushroom compounds have antiviral effects comparable to antiviral drugs, suggesting their potential as candidates for treating viral infections.

Evolution and dispersal of snakes across the Cretaceous-Paleogene mass extinction

Catherine G. Klein et al.

Summary: The study combines molecular data, fossils, and biogeography to reveal the timing of snake diversification and dispersal in relation to the end-Cretaceous mass extinction. Mass extinctions have shaped global biodiversity, leading to rapid diversification of surviving mammals, birds, frogs, and teleost fishes. The evolution of snakes, a major clade of predators, following the K-Pg extinction event remains poorly understood, highlighting the importance of this mass extinction in shaping Earth's extant vertebrate faunas.
