Metabentonite and metakaolin-based geopolymers/zeolites: relation between kind of clay, calcination temperature and concentration of alkaline activator

Michal Slany et al.

Summary: The composition and properties of two different activated calcinated clays were investigated in this study. Various techniques were used to examine the tendency of metabentonite and metakaoline to form geopolymers and zeolites. The optimal sample compositions were determined based on preliminary results, and it was found that 5% NaOH concentration was optimal for metakaolin-based samples, while 10% NaOH concentration was optimal for metabentonite-based samples. The specific surface area of the metabentonite-based samples increased with increasing NaOH concentration, while the reverse effect was observed for metakaolin-based samples.

Spectroscopic, mineralogical and photocatalytic characterization of bentonite clay: A jointed DFT and experimental approach

Elenice Hass Caetano Lacerda et al.

Summary: Over the years, research and development of different systems based on clay minerals have stood out for their eco-friendly behavior, abundant world reserves, low cost, and high industry suitability. This study focuses on the careful characterization of sodium bentonite clay minerals found in Argentina using various spectroscopic techniques, evaluating their mineralogical properties, and performing photocatalytic studies and DFT quantum calculations. The results indicate the presence of cluster particles with irregular sizes and lamellae stacking typically found in montmorillonite clay minerals, as well as high amounts of SiO2 and Al2O3. The properties evaluation showed increased swelling and exchange cation capacities, and the degradation essays demonstrated a decoloration efficiency of 40% in the presence of H2O2. The theoretical investigation provides valuable insights into the influence of impurities and defects on the structural and electronic properties of bentonite mineral clays.

Development of activated carbon from Schizolobium parahyba (guapuruvu) residues employed for the removal of ketoprofen

Yamil L. de O. Salomon et al.

Summary: The study investigated the utilization of Schizolobium parahyba species residue to develop activated carbon for the adsorption of ketoprofen. The results demonstrated that under acidic conditions, the activated carbon showed a high adsorption capacity for ketoprofen, indicating its potential as an effective adsorbent for treating wastewater.

Purification, characterization and partial biological activities of exopolysaccharide produced by Saccharomyces cerevisiae Y3

Lina Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the extraction, purification, and characterization of an exopolysaccharide (EPS) from Saccharomyces cerevisiae Y3 were investigated. The EPS was found to be a hetero-polysaccharide composed of various sugars and exhibited good hydrophilicity, thermal stability, and antioxidation ability.

Adsorption of aflatoxin B1 mycotoxins by raw and lyophilized bentonitic clay

Paula S. Bettiol et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the adsorption capacity of raw bentonite and samples with different lyophilization parameters on AFB(1), showing promising results with over 90% removal capacity for AFB(1) in vitro assays under specific treatment conditions. This provides valuable information for future applications of bentonite as an anti-mycotoxin additive.

FT-IR Method Limitations for β-Glucan Analysis

Ruslan Bikmurzin et al.

Summary: Beta-glucans are biological response modifiers which may vary in structure and activity based on different sources. The hot water extraction method allows for obtaining high molecular weight beta-glucans without altering their structure, and analysis by FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy is crucial for studying the preserved structure of these polysaccharides.

Linear and Nonlinear Regression Analysis for the Adsorption of Remazol Dye by Romanian Brewery Waste By-Product, Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Szende Tonk et al.

Summary: The water balance and economy of Earth are becoming increasingly fragile due to overpopulation, global warming, severe environmental pollution, and water pollution. Finding solutions to water scarcity and water pollution is essential. In this research, an experiment was designed to optimize the adsorption technique of Remazol Red F3B dye using lyophilized brewery yeast waste. It was proved that brewery yeast is a great adsorbent. Different initial parameters were optimized, and the adsorbent's structure and elemental composition were analyzed. The mathematical isotherm models, such as Langmuir I, Freundlich, and Khan models, showed good fits. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model also provided a good fit.
