Green Synthetized Selenium Nanoparticles Using Syzygium aromaticum (Clove) Extract Reduce Pentylenetetrazol-Induced Epilepsy and Associated Cortical Damage in Rats

Mohamed S. S. Othman et al.

Summary: The study aimed to explore the potential anticonvulsant effect of green synthetized selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) using Syzygium aromaticum extract (SAE) (SAE-SeNPs) on epileptic seizures and cortical damage induced by pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) injection in rats, as well as its mechanism. SAE-SeNPs demonstrated a significant increase in seizure latency time, reduction in seizure duration and death rate, counteracted PTZ-induced changes in oxidants and antioxidants, restored pro-inflammatory cytokine levels, and suppressed glial fibrillary acidic protein activity. Furthermore, SAE-SeNPs reduced PTZ-induced cortical cell apoptosis and modulated neurotransmitter levels. The study concludes that SAE-SeNPs exhibit anticonvulsant activity through antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic effects, and modulation of neurotransmitters.

Effect of TiO2 nanoparticles on the photocatalytic properties of PEO coatings on Mg alloy

D. V. Mashtalyar et al.

Summary: A comprehensive study was conducted on the properties of coatings formed on a magnesium alloy by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) using electrolytes with nanosized particles of anatase (titanium dioxide). The formed coatings exhibit a 2.5-fold reduction in corrosion current density and a 25% increase in hardness compared to coatings without particles. Confocal micro-Raman spectroscopy revealed the presence of anatase and rutile phases in the PEO coating composition due to the incorporation of TiO2 nanoparticles during plasma electrolytic treatment. The presence of titanium dioxide has a positive effect on the photocatalytic properties of the coatings, with a 1.6-fold and 1.8-fold increase in the constant rate of methyl orange and methyl blue decomposition, respectively, compared to coatings formed without TiO2 particles.

Enhancing mechanical and photocatalytic properties by surface microstructure regulation of TiO2 nanofiber membranes

Xilin Liao et al.

Summary: TiO2 nanofiber membrane with a complete surface microstructure was prepared by doping Zr to regulate the surface microstructure. The doping of Zr effectively improved the tensile strength, catalytic degradation efficiency, and stability of TiO2 nanofibers under simulated sunlight irradiation. Zr doping also limited the surface crack size and grain size of TiO2 nanofibers, enhanced the surface area effect and carrier transfer efficiency, and expanded the visible light response range.

A facile synthesis approach for GO-ZnO/PES ultrafiltration mixed matrix photocatalytic membranes for dye removal in water: Leveraging the synergy between photocatalysis and membrane filtration

Oranso T. Mahlangu et al.

Summary: In this study, graphene oxide-zinc oxide (GO-ZnO) nanocomposite photocatalytic membranes were fabricated using a novel double casting phase inversion method. The incorporation of GO-ZnO improved the hydrophilicity of the membranes, while the addition of PVP increased the pure water flux. Conversely, increasing GO-ZnO concentration improved the rejection of salt and drugs. Furthermore, the GO-ZnO/PVP membrane displayed the highest photocatalytic degradation performance. Overall, this work demonstrates the potential to improve both membrane filtration and photocatalytic properties through tailored membrane synthesis.
