The Effects of Acute and Repeated Administration of Ketamine on Memory, Behavior, and Plasma Corticosterone Levels in Female Mice

Jonathan Acevedo et al.

Summary: Ketamine is a recently approved anesthetic drug for treatment-resistant depression. Most pre-clinical research on ketamine has focused on males, even though females are diagnosed with depression at higher rates. There is conflicting literature on the acute and long-term effects of ketamine on behavior and cognition. This study examined the effects of acute and repeated ketamine exposure on anxiety, memory, depression, and stress hormone levels in female mice.

Physical Activity Reduces Alcohol Consumption Induced by Reward Downshift

Elena Castejon et al.

Summary: Animal studies have shown that increased consumption of alcohol and anxiolytics can be a result of frustrative reward devaluation or omission, potentially indicating emotional self-medication. This study demonstrates that voluntary physical activity can reduce alcohol intake induced by reward downshift, suggesting that exercise could prevent maladaptive effects of frustration on drug use.

Activation of ventral hippocampal CB1 receptors inhibits ketamine-induced anxiogenic-like behavior: Alteration of BDNF/c-Fos levels in the mouse hippocampus

Sakineh Alijanpour et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether activation of the ventral hippocampal CB1 cannabinoid receptors affects the anxiety-like behaviors induced by ketamine. The results showed that ketamine administration caused anxiogenic-like behavior, but activation of the VH CB1 receptors inhibited these behaviors. Additionally, the levels of BDNF and c-Fos proteins in the hippocampus were altered after ketamine and ACPA treatment.

Sex Differences in the Behavioral, Molecular, and Structural Effects of Ketamine Treatment in Depression

Ethan Ponton et al.

Summary: Major depressive disorder (MDD) manifests differently in men and women, with sex-specific responses to antidepressant treatments. Sex hormones influence response, with females being more sensitive than males. Administration of ketamine should consider sex-specific considerations.

Frustrative nonreward and emotional self-medication:Factors modulating alcohol consumption following reward downshift in rats

Rocio Donaire et al.

Summary: Unexpected loss in life experiences can lead to negative emotions and increased alcohol consumption. Animal experiments show that reward downshifts can increase alcohol preference, while interventions that increase resistance to frustration can decrease alcohol intake. These findings reveal the relationship between emotions and alcohol consumption.

Acute Ketamine Facilitates Fear Memory Extinction in a Rat Model of PTSD Along With Restoring Glutamatergic Alterations and Dendritic Atrophy in the Prefrontal Cortex

Nathalie Sala et al.

Summary: Stress is a major risk factor for psychiatric disorders, including PTSD. Ketamine has been found to block the detrimental effects of acute stress on the glutamate system and improve depressive, anxious, and fear extinction behaviors in rats.

An Examination of the RDoC Negative Valence Systems Domain Constructs and the Self-Reports Unit of Analysis

Anni M. Hasratian et al.

Summary: This study examines the associations between measures of behaviors, cognitions, and mental health symptoms in the Negative Valence Systems (NVS) domain, aiming to identify additional self-report measures that reflect these constructs. The findings suggest the existence of major aspects of the RDoC NVS and positive valence systems in the participant samples, providing recommendations for additional NVS self-report markers.
