Plasmid-Mediated Transfer of Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Soil

Miaoling Meng et al.

Summary: Due to the widespread use of antibiotics, antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) are present in humans, plants, animals, and natural environments. ARGs exhibit migration and transmission in various environmental media, which can be even more harmful than antibiotics themselves. The transfer of ARGs mainly occurs among microorganisms through mobile genetic elements (MGEs) such as plasmids and phages. Soil, as the most microbially active environment, is closely associated with human activities and have become contaminated with antibiotics and ARGs. In this review, the plasmid-mediated migration and transmission of ARGs in natural environments and under different antibiotic selection pressures are discussed. The current methods of plasmid extraction and analysis are summarized, and the mechanism of plasmid conjugation using the F factor as an example is briefly introduced. However, further investigations are needed to understand the contribution of soil plasmids in ARG transmission, considering the global spread of drug-resistant bacteria and the advancements in MGE knowledge.

Review: Mitigating the risks posed by intensification in livestock production: the examples of antimicrobial resistance and zoonoses

W. Gilbert et al.

Summary: The intensification of livestock systems has led to increased access to protein-rich foods, but also brought along environmental degradation, zoonotic disease transmission and antimicrobial resistance genes. Low- and middle-income countries are likely to experience significant intensification in livestock production in the near future, highlighting the need for rapid knowledge transfer and risk mitigation capacity building.

Antibiotic resistance genes in bacteria: Occurrence, spread, and control

Zonghui Jian et al.

Summary: The production and use of antibiotics are becoming increasingly common worldwide, leading to a growing problem of antibiotic resistance which threatens human life, health, and the global economy. Research on antibiotic-resistant bacteria in nonclinical environments is essential to understanding the occurrence and transmission mechanisms of antibiotic resistance.

Manure application increases microbiome complexity in soil aggregate fractions: Results of an 18-year field experiment

Guiping Ye et al.

Summary: Manure application significantly increased soil bacterial diversity, reduced the relative abundance of certain fungi, and influenced the structure of bacterial and fungal communities. It also promoted the growth of diazotrophs and bacterial nitrifiers, while inhibiting bacterial denitrifiers. Furthermore, manure application enhanced saprotrophic fungi abundance and suppressed plant pathogens and parasites, ultimately impacting microbial network complexity.

Pollution by Antibiotics and Antimicrobial Resistance in LiveStock and Poultry Manure in China, and Countermeasures

Ming Tian et al.

Summary: The demand for animal protein has increased worldwide, especially in China where large numbers of livestock and poultry are produced. Overuse of antibiotics in animal feed has caused serious environmental and health risks, particularly antimicrobial resistance. International cooperation and Chinese regulations restricting antibiotic usage are crucial for addressing these issues.

Microbial and chemical pollutants on the manure-crops pathway in the perspective of One Health holistic approach

Martyna Buta et al.

Summary: The study determined the impact of poultry and bovine manure fertilization on antibiotics, heavy metals, and integrase and antibiotic resistance genes in soil, groundwater, and crops. Results suggest that animal manure may increase HMs concentration in soil, leading to their accumulation in crops and potentially affecting human and animal health. The abundance of integrase genes and ARGs poses a serious risk of antibiotic resistance spread in the environment.
