Phytolith evidence for changes in the vegetation diversity and cover of a grassland ecosystem in Northeast China since the mid-Holocene

Guizai Gao et al.

Summary: By analyzing stratigraphic records from a peat profile in the Songnen region of Northeast China, it was found that this region has been occupied by grassland since the mid-Holocene. C3 grasses were always dominant, but C4 grasses have been increasing over time. The decrease in species richness and plant cover over the past 1,000 years was mainly influenced by climate changes, human activities, and local habitat factors.

Holocene vegetation dynamics of Horqin Sandy Land in northern China inferred from the phytolith record of a sand-paleosol section

Zhuo Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the Holocene vegetation dynamics and drivers in the Horqin Sandy Land in northern China using multi-proxy data. Results show that the vegetation in the sandy land changed from sparse and species-poor Leymus chinensis grassland to relatively sparse and species-rich mesophytic herb grassland, and finally to dense and species-rich L. chinensis grassland. Climate change was the main driver of vegetation evolution, while fire and human activities also played a role. The evolution of plant species richness and C-3 plant numbers showed a periodicity of approximately 1000 years, possibly influenced by solar activity and East Asian monsoon intensity.

Late Holocene transition from natural to anthropogenic forcing of vegetation change in the semi-arid region of northern China

Guoqiang Ding et al.

Summary: Understanding the historical changes in vegetation under the influence of natural climate change and human activities in the semi-arid region of northern China is crucial for predicting future vegetation change and addressing ecological problems. This study reconstructed the vegetation succession in the region since the mid-Holocene using fossil pollen samples and carbon dating. The results indicate that natural climate change primarily controlled vegetation development during 8-1 ka, while human activities became the dominant driver of vegetation change after approximately 1 ka.

Spatial patterns of soil phytoliths in a wet vs. dry neotropical forest: Implications for paleoecology

Camilla Crifo et al.

Summary: The study aims to improve paleoenvironmental reconstruction by analyzing soil phytolith samples collected along vegetation transects in rainforest and dry forest in Central and South America. Results show that phytolith samples can distinguish between rainforest and dry forest vegetation and help reconstruct important structural and compositional aspects of the vegetation.

Application of soil phytoliths to the quantitative characterization of temperate grassland ecosystems: a case study in Northeast China

Guizai Gao et al.

Summary: By analyzing the relationship between soil phytoliths and plant species inventory data from 77 sites in the Songnen grassland in Northeast China, this study found that phytolith assemblages can distinguish different grassland types and correspond well with community cover and species richness, providing reliable estimates for paleovegetation reconstruction. However, phytoliths were less reliable in representing biomass and diversity index.

Reconstruction of local-scale plant community characteristics using phytolith: A case study of a forested region in Northeast China

Guizai Gao et al.

Summary: The study found that modern phytolith records can provide reliable data for reconstructing past ecosystems. In a forested region in Northeast China, the vegetation evolution mainly went through stages of boreal or coniferous forest, mixed broadleaf-conifer forest, etc. Phytolith records correspond well with climatic changes to reflect plant community dynamics.
