Design and analysis of multi-layer silicon nanoparticle solar cells

Sayyed Reza Mirnaziry et al.

Summary: This study investigates the concept of nanoparticle-based solar cells composed of a silicon nanoparticle stack as a light trapping absorber for ultrathin photovoltaics. The potential of using these nanotextured structures in enhancing light absorption is explored through detailed optical analysis on various parameters. The electrical performance of selected configurations and the impact of contact points between nanoparticles are also computed. The research shows that SiO2 nanoparticles on top of the cell structure can enhance the photocurrent.

Silicon nanoparticles with UV range photoluminescence synthesized through cryomilling induced phase transformation and etching

Hemaprabha Elangovan et al.

Summary: Silicon nanoparticles with a particle size distribution of around 80 nm were successfully obtained through controlled impact mode cryomilling of semiconductor grade silicon wafers. The microstructure analysis revealed a two-phase structure in each particle, with the crystalline silicon partially transformed into an amorphous phase. Further etching of the two-phase nanocomposites resulted in the dissolution of the amorphous phase, producing free nanoparticles of approximately 2 nm in size that exhibited UV range photoluminescence and showed potential for sensors and other optical applications.

Cellular and biomolecular detection based on suspended microchannel resonators

Juhee Ko et al.

Summary: Suspended microchannel resonators (SMRs) improve mass resolution significantly with vacuum packaging and fast resonance frequency tracking, allowing buoyant mass measurement of single micro-/nanoparticles and cells without stopping or slowing down. This technology has been widely used in biological applications, enabling simultaneous measurements of cell growth and cell cycle progression.

Color Toning of Mie Resonant Silicon Nanoparticle Color Inks

Takuma Okazaki et al.

Summary: A Monte Carlo simulation was developed to predict the reflection color of silicon nanoparticle inks, demonstrating a strong dependence on concentration. To expand the controllable range of hue, saturation, and brightness of the inks, a mixture ink with light-absorbing carbon black nanoparticles was developed, allowing for vivid reflection colors under room light.

Synthesis of silicon nanoparticles using a novel reactor with an elongated reaction zone created by coaxially aligned SiH4 gas and a CO2 laser beam

Seok-Ho Maeng et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the efficient synthesis of silicon nanoparticles using a novel CO2 laser pyrolysis reactor with an elongated reaction zone. The reactor aligns the laser beam and precursor gas stream in the same direction, contributing to more uniform size distribution of the produced silicon nanoparticles. Mechanisms of silicon nanoparticle synthesis and characteristics of the synthesized nanoparticles were discussed based on X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy measurements.

Crystalline silicon nanoparticle formation by tailored plasma irradiation: self-structurization, nucleation and growth acceleration, and size control

Daehan Choi et al.

Summary: A new self-assembly method is reported in this study, which uses controlled extremely low plasma ion energy in rare gas environments to produce silicon nanoparticles. This method allows direct crystallization nucleation on the surface of amorphous film in nonharsh and nontoxic environments, promoting nucleation and growth rates of crystalline silicon nanoparticles. The size of crystalline silicon nanoparticles can be tailored to the nanometer scale through control of plasma ion energy.
