Starting-up performances and microbial community shifts in the coupling process (SAPD-A) with sulfide autotrophic partial denitrification (SAPD) and anammox treating nitrate and ammonium contained wastewater

Xin Xin et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel coupling process (SAPD-A) combining sulfide autotrophic partial denitrification (SAPD) and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) was developed using an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR). The process consisted of two stages, with the SAPD process successfully started by gradually increasing the inflow of nitrate and sulfide. The SAPD-A process achieved high removal efficiencies of nitrate, ammonium, and total nitrogen, and was dominated by Anammox for nitrogen removal.

Mechanisms of phosphate removal by Micron-Scale Zero-Valent iron

Ying Zhao et al.

Summary: Extensive studies have been conducted on phosphate removal by micron-scale zero-valent iron (mZVI). The mechanisms of phosphate removal were elucidated using ATR-FTIR, XRD, and XANES techniques, revealing that precipitation is the main pathway for phosphate removal by ZVI under aerobic conditions. This study significantly improves our understanding of the fundamental processes involved in phosphate removal by ZVI.

Fast start-up and reactivation of anammox process using polyurethane sponge

Zhenghua Peng et al.

Summary: Anammox is an efficient nitrogen removal technique, but its long start-up time limits industrial application, therefore the use of carriers to accelerate start-ups is essential. Preservation of anammox bacteria is crucial, and adding polyurethane sponge can shorten the start-up and reactivation time by retaining more anammox bacteria in the reactor.

Simultaneous biological removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from secondary effluent of wastewater treatment plants by advanced treatment: A review

Qi Zhou et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the key to improving the water quality of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) - simultaneous removal of nitrogen and phosphorus. The composition of secondary effluent from municipal WWTPs is introduced, and three main treatment processes for simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal are summarized. Their performances, mechanisms, influencing factors, and microbial community structures are analyzed. The advanced removal of nitrogen and phosphorus by different technologies is compared and summarized. The challenges and future prospects of simultaneous removal of nitrogen and phosphorus technologies for secondary effluent are proposed.

New insights on simultaneous nitrate and phosphorus removal in pyrite-involved mixotrophic denitrification biofilter for a long-term operation: Performance change and its underlying mechanism

Zhongshuo Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the differences in nitrate and phosphorus removal from municipal tailwater between volcanic and pyrite supported biofilters. The results showed that pyrite-involved mixotrophic denitrification led to higher nitrate removal efficiency due to the synergistic effect of influent organic and pyrite, while chemical phosphorus removal resulted in consistently higher phosphorus removal efficiency. The study also deduced the mechanism of simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal in the pyrite-involved mixotrophic denitrification process.

Pilot-scale evaluation of partial denitrification/anammox on nitrogen removal from low COD/N real sewage based on a modified process

Qi Zhao et al.

Summary: The nitrogen removal performance of a pilot-scale biosystem was significantly improved by implementing partial denitrification/anammox (PD/A) in real sewage with low COD/N ratio. Inoculating biocarriers into anaerobic and anoxic zones enhanced anammox and nitrogen removal performance. The anoxic unit served as the PD/A hotspot, enriched with Ca. Brocadia and partial denitrification functional groups in the biofilms, contributing to 34.1% of total nitrogen removal.
