Macroscopic and microscopic comparison of pecten oculi in different avian species

Summary: The current study examines the differences in the pecten oculi of different avian species through morphological, macroscopic, light, and electron microscopic examinations. Seven avian species were comprehensively researched, and measurements were taken on the pecten oculi through morphometric analyses, stereo and light microscopic measurements. The study found that the height of the pecten oculi did not differ among the species, but the macroscopic measurements showed that it was larger in birds with the highest value. Additionally, birds with keen eyesight, raptor characteristics, and migratory behavior had larger pecten oculi vessels and more melanocytes.

Ultrastructural characterizations of the pecten oculi of the common ostrich (Struthio camelus): New insight to scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive X-ray analysis

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive ultrastructural description of the pecten oculi of the common ostrich, as well as the first attempt to analyze its elements composition using SEM-EDX at three regions. The pecten oculi consists of three regions with 24-25 plates, and is located near the optic nerve disc with pleats separated by inter-pleat spaces. SEM-EDX analysis shows that carbon is the most abundant element in the pecten oculi, followed by oxygen, sulfate, and calcium.

Visual adaptation and retinal characterization of the Garganey (Anas querquedula): Histological and scanning electron microscope observations

Summary: The study aimed to provide a complete morphological description of the eye of the migratory Garganey duck and its visual adaptation with different environmental conditions. The findings revealed features of both diurnal and nocturnal birds in the eye structure, with pigmented epithelium containing melanin and cone as the dominant photoreceptor. SEM examination showed reticular arrangement of collagen fibrils on the external surface.

Summary: The study examined the structure of the pecten oculi in Northern Bald Ibises for the first time, revealing similarities to other diurnal bird species with accordion-like pleats, abundant blood vessels, and melanocytes. The pecten had 13-14 pleats and a bridge with stronger pigmentation at the apical part. Overall, the general morphology of the pecten oculi in Northern Bald Ibises was found to be comparable to that in other migratory bird species.
