The Santo Domingo fault system, Galeana (Nuevo Leon): evidence of neotectonics between the Sierra Madre Oriental and the Basin and Range provinces and hazard implications for northeastern Mexico

Iris Lucia Gauna-Sauceda et al.

Summary: Neotectonic activity in the western margin of the Sierra Madre Oriental was evaluated using various analyses. The study focused on the Santo Domingo Fault System (SDFS), which is one of the largest active extensional fault zones in northeastern Mexico. The results show that the SDFS is well-orientated for future reactivation as a normal fault system, with the potential to produce earthquakes of magnitude 5 < M-w < 6 or even M-w 7.0 if the entire fault system ruptures.

A review of the Cenozoic geology and tectonic evolution of the Mesa Central de M & eacute;xico

Angel Francisco Nieto-Samaniego et al.

Summary: This paper presents an update of the Cenozoic stratigraphy, structure, and tectonic evolution of the Mesa Central of Mexico. It reveals that the region has undergone three phases of exhumation and three-dimensional deformation, mainly influenced by the arrival of a slab window under the region. The crustal thickness of the Mesa Central varies between 30 km and 40 km, and extension in this region has been ongoing for approximately 48 million years. While most of the region shows little or no recent tectonic and magmatic activity, active zones with magmatism and seismicity have been documented in Durango and San Luis Potosi.

Upper crustal shear-wave velocity structure Beneath Western Java, Indonesia from seismic ambient noise tomography

Shindy Rosalia et al.

Summary: This paper presents a depth inversion study of Rayleigh wave group velocities in western Java, Indonesia, to obtain an S-wave velocity model. By utilizing seismic ambient noise cross-correlation, the study reveals a pronounced NE-SW contrast of low and high Vs in the shallow crust, which correlates well with the Bouguer anomaly map. The low Vs region is interpreted as alluvial and volcanic products, while the high Vs region is associated with volcanism from previous episodes of subduction. The study provides valuable insights for future earthquake research in the region.

The early Palaeogene transition from thin-skinned to thick-skinned shortening in the Potosi uplift, Sierra Madre Oriental, northeastern Mexico

Stewart A. Williams et al.

Summary: This study reveals the structural evolution of the Potosi uplift in the central Sierra Madre Oriental in Mexico, involving thick-skinned uplift and shortening. The timing of exhumation associated with thick-skinned uplift suggests a continuation of shortening rather than a separate tectonic event, with along-strike differences in timing of exhumation and deformation styles.

Summary: The study describes the Tamatan Group in the Huizachal-Peregrina Anticlinorium in northeastern Mexico, proposing a provenance model based on new petrological and geochemical data. The sediments show derivation from various rock types, intense weathering, and high recycling of the source area.

Early Mississippian precollisional, peri-Gondwanan volcanic arc in NE-Mexico: Aserradero Rhyolite from Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas

Juan Alonso Ramirez-Fernandez et al.

Summary: The study focuses on pre-Mesozoic geological history of NE Mexico to reconstruct the processes at the NW margin of Gondwana. The Huizachal-Peregrina Anticlinorium in Tamaulipas is a regional structure produced during the Cretaceous-Palaeogene Laramide Orogeny and comprises Precambrian and Palaeozoic units. The Aserradero Rhyolite is believed to represent an early stage of a precollisional Carboniferous-Permian peri-Gondwanan arc.

Active tectonics along the Sheladiz seismogenic fault in the Western Zagros fold-thrust belt, Kurdistan, Northern Iraq

Jamal A. H. Doski

Summary: This study presents a clear case of seismic activity caused by the Quaternary reactivation of a seismogenic blind basement fault. The findings suggest that earthquakes in the Sheladiz area are mainly produced by left-lateral strike-slip movements along a seismically active basement fault. The stress inversion results indicate a predominant N-S oriented maximum compressive stress in the area, supporting active deformation rates along the Arabia-Eurasia collision zone.

Delineation of Upper Crustal Structure Beneath the Island of Lombok, Indonesia, Using Ambient Seismic Noise Tomography

Achmad F. N. Sarjan et al.

Summary: The first ambient noise tomography conducted in Lombok successfully delineated the seismic velocity structure in the upper crust using local waveform data observed at temporary stations. Group velocity maps were generated with the subspace inversion method and Fast Marching Method to trace ray-paths of surface waves and extract shear wave velocity anomalies possibly associated with volcanic activity.
