Influence of fire-resistant coating on the physical characteristics and residual mechanical properties of E350 steel section exposed to elevated temperature

G. Jaya Kumar et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of fire-resistant coating on post-fire residual mechanical properties of E350 steel grade. The results reveal that specimens coated with vermiculite and perlite exhibited higher residual mechanical property compared to other coatings, and water-cooled specimens had higher strength loss than air-cooled specimens.

Post-fire flexural behaviour and performance of unrestrained cold-formed steel built-up section beams: Experimental and numerical investigation

G. Jaya Kumar et al.

Summary: CFS construction is lightweight and cost-effective, but there is limited research on its fire safety performance. This study investigated the flexural performance of back-to-back CFS sections under unrestrained conditions and found that the load-carrying capacity of CFS decreases significantly after high temperature exposure.

Design of Cold-formed Steel Built-Up Closed Section Columns using Direct Strength Method

Sivaganesh Selvaraj et al.

Summary: The structural behavior of Cold-formed Steel (CFS) face-to-face connected built-up closed cross-section columns is investigated in this study. The influence of intermediate longitudinal connection spacing and the appropriateness of the current design method are examined through experimental tests. The failure modes and ultimate loading capacity are analyzed, and a modified local slenderness expression is proposed to consider the influence of intermediate longitudinal fastener spacing in the design strength.

Post-fire behaviour and improving the performance of hot rolled open sections subjected to standard fire exposure

Tattukolla Kiran et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of standard fire conditions on the post-fire strength of hot rolled hollow steel sections, analyzing the influence of passive protection, cooling conditions, and micro structural changes. Experimental results showed that passively protected specimens exhibited higher post-fire resistance, while the post-fire capacity decreased by approximately 10-15% in water cooled specimens.

Summary: This paper investigates the structural behavior of cold-formed steel back-to-back channel sections under axial compression at elevated temperatures. It proposes design equations that outperform existing equations in design guidelines and demonstrates their accuracy in predicting the axial strength of these sections.

Fire resistance of built-up cold-formed steel columns

Tiago A. C. Pires et al.

Summary: This study conducted a series of fire resistance tests on cold-formed steel columns, finding that the fire resistance performance significantly increased with the use of plasterboard hollow encasement. Plasterboard hollow encasement can be considered as an alternative to enhance the fire resistance performance of steel columns.

Non-linear behaviour and design of web stiffened battened built-up stainless steel channel sections under axial compression

G. Beulah Gnana Ananthi et al.

Summary: Cold-formed stainless steel is increasingly used in structural components due to its higher corrosion resistance and durability compared to carbon steel. A parametric study was conducted on stainless steel battened built-up columns, finding that most columns failed due to distortional-flexural buckling interaction. Design strengths for stainless steel battened built-up columns were found to be 4% conservative on average compared to design guidance for carbon steel built-up columns.

Web crippling capacity of fastened cold-formed steel channels with edge-stiffened web holes, un-stiffened web holes and plain webs under two-flange loading

Boshan Chen et al.

Summary: This study conducted 36 new web crippling tests on CFS channels with edge-stiffened web holes under fastened support. The results showed that specimens with fastened flanges have higher ultimate capacity than those with unfastened flanges, with increases of 71% and 33% for end-two-flange (ETF) and interior-two-flange (ITF) loading, respectively. The test results were compared with different design standards, and it was found that the web crippling capacity reduction factor proposed by Uzzaman's equations gave close predictions to the test results.

Design of cold-formed stainless steel RHS and SHS beam-columns at elevated temperatures

Yuner Huang et al.

Summary: The numerical investigation of cold-formed stainless steel beam-columns at elevated temperatures demonstrates that existing design specifications are generally capable of accurately predicting their strengths, with the direct strength method providing the most accurate prediction when using the carbon steel curve. Among the design rules assessed in this study, the European Code provides the most conservative prediction.
