Molecular Evolution of Acceptor-Donor-Acceptor-type Conjugated Oligomer Nanoparticles for Efficient Photothermal Antimicrobial Therapy

Huanxiang Yuan et al.

Summary: Infectious diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms can have serious consequences and threaten life. Drug-resistant bacteria have made traditional antibiotics less effective. This study develops conjugated oligomers with tunable backbones for regulating their photo-thermal conversion, which show high photothermal conversion efficiency. The resulting nanoparticles have strong antimicrobial activity against drug-resistant bacteria under near-infrared irradiation, promoting wound healing in diabetic mice. This work provides ideas for designing efficient antimicrobial agents against drug-resistant microbial infections activated by near-infrared.

Biomimetic Nanomedicine-Triggered in Situ Vaccination for Innate and Adaptive Immunity Activations for Bacterial Osteomyelitis Treatment

Han Lin et al.

Summary: In this study, we developed a biomimetic nanomedicine called HMMP for in situ vaccination against bacterial infection, focusing on osteomyelitis. The HMMP showed a burst release of bacterial antigens, triggering both cellular and humoral adaptive immune responses. Furthermore, it generated robust systemic antibacterial immunity and long-lasting bacteria-specific immune memory responses.

Strategies for efficient photothermal therapy at mild temperatures: Progresses and challenges

Peng Gao et al.

Summary: Photothermal therapy (PTT) is a method of eliminating tumors through hyperthermia induced by photothermal agents (PTAs) under laser irradiation. However, current methods require long, frequent, and high-power density laser irradiation, which can cause damage to the skin and healthy tissues. In contrast, low-temperature photothermal therapy (LTPTT) can inhibit tumors through mild hyperthermia, making it more attractive and feasible. This article systematically summarizes the strategies for achieving LTPTT, introduces various organic and inorganic materials used as PTAs, and discusses the challenges and future perspectives in this field.

Selenocompounds and Sepsis-Redox Bypass Hypothesis: Part B-Selenocompounds in the Management of Early Sepsis

Xavier Forceville et al.

Summary: Endothelial barrier damage is a major event in early sepsis, and selenoprotein-P plays a crucial role in antioxidant endothelial protection. Sodium selenite has cytotoxic effects against leukocytes, but may be harmful to activated endothelial cells. The combination of selenoprotein-P and sodium selenite may be a promising intervention for early sepsis.

Exploiting autophagy-regulative nanomaterials for activation of dendritic cells enables reinforced cancer immunotherapy

Ying-Hua Guan et al.

Summary: Dendritic cells (DCs) play a critical role in regulating immune response and anti-tumor process. However, immunosuppressive cells and factors in the tumor microenvironment pose challenges to DC function. Therefore, designing nanomaterials to regulate DC autophagy is important for enhancing immune function.

Hydrogen selenide, a vital metabolite of sodium selenite, uncouples the sulfilimine bond and promotes the reversal of liver fibrosis

Dongrui Luan et al.

Summary: The study revealed that sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) has a therapeutic effect on liver fibrosis, mainly through the metabolite hydrogen selenide (H2Se) uncoupling the sulfilimine bond in collagen IV. By monitoring changes in H2Se, NADPH, and H(2)O(2) levels in vivo, the mechanism of the therapeutic effect of Na2SeO3 on liver fibrosis was confirmed.

Development of systemic immune dysregulation in a rat trauma model of biomaterial-associated infection

Casey E. Vantucci et al.

Summary: Orthopedic biomaterial-associated infections can lead to systemic and local immune dysregulation, with infected groups lacking a regulated and coordinated systemic cytokine response compared to non-infected controls. High levels of MDSCs were most correlated with the infection group, while high levels of T cells were most correlated with the control group.
