On the gas heating effect of helium atmospheric pressure plasma jet

Fellype do Nascimento et al.

Summary: Plasma medicine is a new research field driven by the development of plasma sources. Helium is commonly used as the carrier gas to generate cold atmospheric pressure plasma jets. This study found that the heating of a helium plasma jet comes mainly from the expansion of the gas. Despite the increase in temperature with distance, plasma jets with temperatures lower than 40 degrees Celsius can be produced at low helium flow rates.

Effects of duty ratio on liquid- and polymer-surface treatment by a unipolar microsecond-pulsed helium atmospheric-pressure plasma jet

Jin Hee Bae et al.

Summary: The effects of duty ratio of a unipolar microsecond-pulsed helium atmospheric-pressure plasma jet (APPJ) on liquid- and polymer-surface treatments were analyzed. By varying operating parameters such as applied voltage and additive flow, changes in plasma plume length, gas temperature, excitation temperature, discharge current, absorption power, and optical emission spectra were observed. The experiments included exposure of de-ionized water to the APPJ and investigating the effect of plasma treatment on polymeric surfaces using polycarbonate, polypropylene, and polymethylmethacrylate as substrates. The findings showed increased surface energy and changed wetting characteristics due to the introduction of polar groups.

Active species evolution in the presence of different targets impacted by a helium plasma jet at atmospheric pressure

J. Cosimi et al.

Summary: A low-temperature plasma jet is generated by a dielectric barrier discharge powered by a pulsed high voltage in helium flow at atmospheric pressure. The transition from laminar to turbulent regime and the propagation behavior of ionization waves are studied in different targets. The behavior of the plasma jet and the active species are investigated using optical characterizations.

The full range Joule-Thomson inversion curve of helium-3

Kohei Tada

Summary: This paper presents the full range Joule-Thomson inversion curve of helium-3 constructed by a virial-type equation of state, and compares it with previous studies to validate the results. The peak temperature, peak pressure, and minimum and maximum inversion temperatures at zero pressure of helium-3 are determined in this study. The reduced inversion curve of helium-3 is also obtained and compared with other quantum and non-quantum fluids, with discrepancies explained by the thermal de Broglie wavelength.

Summary: This study examines the influence of skin tissue and cell culture medium with different permittivities on a kHz helium atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) used for wound healing. The results show that interaction with these targets increases plasma plume diameter and intensity, accelerates plasma bullet velocity, and enhances specific emission spectra. The varied characteristics of the He APPJ interacting with different targets are attributed to surface charging and electric field intensity considerations.
