Selected Biomarkers of Depression: What Are the Effects of Cytokines and Inflammation?

Stefan Harsanyi et al.

Summary: Depression is a global mental illness that affects many people and reduces their quality of life. Studies have shown that the worldwide prevalence of depression is around 5%, with newer research reporting a staggering prevalence of 27.6%. It is important to find a way to quantitatively assess depression using specific biomarkers that can reflect the patient's condition and the effects of therapy.

Mindfulness Training Changes Brain Dynamics During Depressive Rumination: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Anne Maj van der Velden et al.

Summary: Depression is a rising global disability, and one of its most debilitating aspects is depressive rumination. Mindfulness meditation has been found to be beneficial for individuals experiencing negative rumination. A study using functional magnetic resonance imaging showed that mindfulness-based cognitive therapy led to decreased connectivity in the salience network during rumination, and this change in connectivity was associated with improvements in attention to body sensations.

Liver and inflammatory biomarker relationships to depression symptoms in healthy older adults

Karen Savage et al.

Summary: Early identification and management of physical and mental illness is crucial for maintaining quality of life in older adults. This study found that markers of peripheral inflammation and liver function were elevated in healthy older adults, and were associated with depressive symptoms. Lifestyle interventions may play a role in mitigating the negative impact of aging on mental health.

Associations between Melatonin, Neuroinflammation, and Brain Alterations in Depression

Eunsoo Won et al.

Summary: Inflammatory conditions and disruptions in circadian rhythms, including alterations in the melatonin system, have been suggested as mechanisms underlying major depressive disorder. Melatonin, with its immunological and non-immunological actions, can suppress inflammation and influence neuroinflammation and neurotoxicity, leading to alterations in brain regions implicated in depression. Further research on the associations between melatonin, immune markers, and brain structure and function may help identify potential biomarkers for MDD.

Dynamics of camel and human hemoglobin revealed by molecular simulations

Amanat Ali et al.

Summary: This study investigates the behavior of camel hemoglobin under stress and compares it to human hemoglobin using molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that camel hemoglobin is more stable than human hemoglobin under physiological stress. Additionally, the cofactor-binding regions in human hemoglobin exhibit greater fluctuations compared to camel hemoglobin. The study also identifies differences in residues interacting with heme between camel and human hemoglobin.

Preoperative hemoglobin-to-red cell distribution width ratio as a prognostic factor in pulmonary large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma: a retrospective cohort study

Summary: This study aimed to assess the potential prognostic role of the hemoglobin/red cell distribution width ratio (HRR) in pulmonary large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (PLCNEC) patients. The results showed that low HRR was associated with poor overall survival (OS) and could be used as an inexpensive prognostic factor in PLCNEC patients undergoing resection.

Patterns of peripartum depression screening and detection in a large, multi-site, integrated healthcare system

Amanda Koire et al.

Summary: This study examined the screening patterns of peripartum depression (PD) and found that two thirds of women were not screened until their third trimester, resulting in delayed detection for approximately 28% of women who were ultimately positive. It is recommended that obstetric providers screen for PD as early as possible during pregnancy and continue to screen more frequently before 9 weeks postpartum to avoid delays in detection and intervention.

Relationship between Selected Functional Performance Parameters and the Occurrence of Anaemia in Hospitalized Females and Males Aged 80 and More

Justyna Brozonowicz et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the relationship between the occurrence of anaemia in hospitalized females and males aged 80 years and more and selected determinants of motor fitness. In males, an increase in muscle strength was found to reduce the risk of anaemia, while no statistically significant correlations were found in females. Further research is needed to identify potential factors related to anaemia and to develop non-invasive diagnostic tools for the elderly.

Red cell distribution width in patients with diabetes and myocardial infarction: An analysis from the EXAMINE trial

Joao Pedro Ferreira et al.

Summary: Higher RDW values in patients with T2D and recent acute coronary syndrome were associated with older age, longer diabetes duration, and increased comorbidities. Elevated RDW was independently related to adverse cardiovascular outcomes, all-cause death, and non-cardiovascular mortality. RDW showed modest correlations with inflammatory, pro-apoptotic, pro-fibrotic, and congestion markers, and was not influenced by alogliptin treatment.

Preoperatively elevated RDW-SD and RDW-CV predict favorable survival in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma patients after curative resection

Xingchen Li et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that red blood cell distribution width (RDW) may be a prognostic factor in cancer patients, including those with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC). This study found that lower preoperative levels of RDW were associated with poorer survival in ICC patients after curative resection. This suggests that RDW levels could potentially be used as a predictive marker for prognosis in ICC patients.

Low Hemoglobin-to-Red Cell Distribution Width Ratio Is Associated with Disease Progression and Poor Prognosis in Upper Tract Urothelial Carcinoma

Yung-Chun Su et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prognostic value of hemoglobin-to-red cell distribution width ratio (HRR) in upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) patients for the first time. The results showed that HRR <= 1.05 and WBC > 8.65 x 10(3) cells/mu L were independent prognostic factors for predicting deterioration of progression-free survival (PFS), cancer-specific survival (CSS), and overall survival (OS). HRR and WBC are easy to obtain in clinical practice and provide useful prognostic information before surgery for UTUC.
