Hydrodynamic damping enhancement by implementing a novel combined rigid-elastic heave plate

Abuzar Abazari et al.

Summary: Heave plates are structural components used to reduce vibrations caused by environmental forces on marine and offshore structures by changing hydrodynamic properties. Experimental studies show that a novel combined rigid-elastic design can improve damping through increased velocity in the elastic part and added mass creation in the central rigid part. Adjusting the ratio of rigid-to-elastic parts diameter can change the desired percentage of total added mass and damping.

Analysis of the hydrodynamic damping characteristics on a symmetrical hydrofoil

Wei Wang et al.

Summary: The study successfully simulated hydrodynamic damping using a one-way FSI energy balance method, finding that the hydrodynamic damping ratio increases with increasing vibration displacement. A displacement interval within which the hydrodynamic damping ratio is slightly affected by vibration displacement can still be detected.

Numerical and experimental studies of heave damping and added mass of spar with heave plates using forced oscillation

Mahesh J. Rao et al.

Summary: In this study, heave damping and added mass of classic spar with heave plate were investigated through experiments and numerical simulations of forced heave oscillation. The parameters were found to be affected by the amplitude and frequency of oscillation, with discussions on the impact of different heave plate configurations.
