Nitrogen Fixation in Mesoscale Eddies of the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre: Patterns and Mechanisms

Mathilde Dugenne et al.

Summary: We sampled mesoscale cyclones and anticyclones in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre in 2017 and 2018 and compared our observations with seasonal patterns from the Hawaii Ocean Time-series (HOT) program. We found that N-2 fixation rates (NFRs) were significantly high in the centers of anticyclones compared to previous observations. The increase in NFRs in 2017 was linked to high concentrations of the diazotroph Crocosphaera.

Upper Ocean Biogeochemistry of the Oligotrophic North Pacific Subtropical Gyre: From Nutrient Sources to Carbon Export

Minhan Dai et al.

Summary: Subtropical gyres cover a significant portion of the world's ocean and are typically considered as ocean deserts due to their permanent stratification, depleted surface nutrients, and low biological productivity. Despite advancements in understanding biogeochemistry, subtropical gyres remain understudied. This review focuses on the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre and compares it with other subtropical gyres. It highlights the spatial variability and its impact on community structure and export production. The review also identifies knowledge gaps and research challenges in these unique systems that warrant future studies.

Natural iron fertilization by shallow hydrothermal sources fuels diazotroph blooms in the ocean

Sophie Bonnet et al.

Summary: Iron is a vital nutrient for ocean productivity, and this study reveals the previously unknown mechanism of natural iron fertilization in the ocean. Shallow hydrothermal fluids along the Tonga volcanic arc significantly impact iron concentrations in the photic layer, stimulating biological activity and resulting in extensive chlorophyll blooms. This iron enrichment leads to higher diazotroph activity and carbon export fluxes, providing a regional hotspot sink for atmospheric CO2.

Potential drivers and consequences of regional phosphate depletion in the western subtropical North Pacific

Zhongwei Yuan et al.

Summary: In nitrogen limited low latitude ocean regions, phosphate depletion can induce stress responses in marine microbes. This study associates a broad region of phosphate depletion in the subtropical North Pacific with different levels of phosphorus stress, and demonstrates the primary nitrogen limitation of the phytoplankton community with the relief provided by aerosol supply. Enhanced alkaline phosphatase activities indicate elevated phosphorus stress in northern sites with depleted phosphate. Increased aerosol deposition, likely stimulated by aerosol iron supply, can drive the regional enhancement in phosphate depletion through elevated nitrogen fixation. These findings are crucial for predicting future biogeochemical responses in the subtropical North Pacific to changes in aerosol supply.

Changes in nutrient stoichiometry in responding to diatom growth in cyclonic eddies

Kuanbo Zhou et al.

Summary: Nutrient stoichiometry (N + N/SRP, N/P) plays a crucial role in phytoplankton growth, competition, and niche partitioning in illuminated oceans. However, the N/P ratio varies across different regions, and the mechanisms behind this variability remain unclear. In this study, we observed significant variations in the N/P ratio in response to different life stages of cyclonic eddies in the South China Sea, indicating the importance of eddy pumping in affecting diatom growth and P uptake. These findings challenge the parameterization of physical-biogeochemical models with fixed phytoplankton uptake stoichiometry ratios, particularly in oligotrophic ocean regions where cyclonic eddies are common.

Biogeochemical Dynamics in Adjacent Mesoscale Eddies of Opposite Polarity

Benedetto Barone et al.

Summary: This study examined the biogeochemical impacts of cyclones and anticyclones in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. It found that cyclones led to increased nutrient fluxes due to diapycnal mixing, resulting in changes in plankton community and oxygen and nutrient concentrations. However, the stoichiometry of oxygen and inorganic nutrients did not match predictions, suggesting additional biological processes at play. The study highlights the importance of mesoscale biogeochemical perturbations in oligotrophic ecosystems.

Nutrient co-limitation in the subtropical Northwest Pacific

Thomas J. Browning et al.

Summary: Experimental results from the Philippine Sea indicate a gradient from nitrogen limitation in the north to nitrogen-iron co-limitation in the south, driving different phytoplankton growth responses. This large-scale phytoplankton response gradient is hypothesized to be climate sensitive and potentially important for regulating the distribution of predatory fish.

The Angola Gyre is a hotspot of dinitrogen fixation in the South Atlantic Ocean

Tanya Marshall et al.

Summary: Biological dinitrogen fixation is crucial to the ocean's biological pump, but understanding its distribution and rate has been challenging due to uncertainty surrounding the controls. This study shows that the Angola Gyre in the eastern tropical South Atlantic is a hotspot for dinitrogen fixation, contradicting previous models. These findings suggest that the availability of iron and excess phosphorus from margin sediments play a key role in promoting dinitrogen fixation in this region.

Iron Depletion in the Deep Chlorophyll Maximum: Mesoscale Eddies as Natural Iron Fertilization Experiments

Nicholas J. Hawco et al.

Summary: In stratified oligotrophic waters, natural iron addition events regularly occur with the passage of mesoscale eddies, providing a way to test for iron limitation at the DCM. Studies of two eddies in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre indicate different impacts of iron addition on phytoplankton communities in different eddy types. Iron addition experiments did not increase productivity in either eddy, but revealed potential indicators of iron stress among Prochlorococcus. Recycling of dissolved iron in oligotrophic ecosystems appears sufficient to avoid iron limitation at the DCM under typical conditions.

Nanomolar phosphate supply and its recycling drive net community production in the subtropical North Pacific

Fuminori Hashihama et al.

Summary: The seasonal drawdown of dissolved inorganic carbon in the subtropical upper ocean contributes significantly to net community production globally. While surface macronutrients are chronically depleted, nanomolar increases in surface nitrate plus nitrite and phosphate from summer to winter in the western subtropical North Pacific are found to be in near-stoichiometric balance with microbial C:N:P ratios. These findings suggest that the nanomolar upward supply of phosphorus and its preferential recycling play a vital role in sustaining net community production in oligotrophic ocean environments.
