Analysis and simulation of the driving mechanism and ecological effects of land cover change in the Weihe River basin, China

Wenjin Xu et al.

Summary: This paper aims to construct a framework for understanding the driving mechanisms and ecological effects of land cover change (LCC) and predicting future LCC patterns. The authors used a rule-mining framework based on the patch-generating land use simulation (PLUS) model to analyze the drivers of LCC and investigated its ecological effects using neighborhood analysis and ecological effect index. They also introduced remote sensing-based ecological indices (RSEI) and a stepwise regression model to explore and predict the integrated ecological effect of LCC. The findings have practical implications for land management and ecological protection.

Ecosystem carbon storage considering combined environmental and land-use changes in the future and pathways to carbon neutrality in developed regions

Jingyi Liu et al.

Summary: This study focuses on how developed subtropical and tropical regions can increase carbon storage and achieve carbon neutrality, using Guangdong Province in South China as an example. The results show that factors such as topography, temperature, and land-use configurations significantly affect the carbon storage of different land-use types in space and time. Achieving net-zero CO2 emissions relies more on reducing emissions than land management.

Where should China practice forestry in a warming world?

Lei Zhang et al.

Summary: As a nature-based and cost-effective solution, forestation plays a crucial role in combating global warming, biodiversity collapse, environmental degradation, and global well-being. China, as a global leader in forestation, has achieved significant overall success in environmental improvements through large-scale forestation programs. However, negative effects have also emerged at local scales due to the planting of maladapted tree species. To better achieve carbon neutrality and ecological civilization, China has committed to further increasing forestation. However, the exact locations for forestation lands and efforts are not well understood yet, especially in the face of rapid climate change.

Identification of priority areas for afforestation in the Loess Plateau region of China

Jianfeng Sun et al.

Summary: This study constructs a framework for identifying land suitable for afforestation on the Loess Plateau in China. By simulating land use changes under different development scenarios from 2020 to 2030, the study identifies suitable land for afforestation and explores the trends and spatial distribution of different forest stands. The results show that only a small area on the Loess Plateau is suitable for forest growth by 2030, mainly in the eastern region, with the southeastern part being at greater risk of degradation. The study suggests that large-scale conversion of farmland to forest may not be feasible, but greening in local areas can be achieved through scientific planning, with grasslands being a more suitable approach to ecological restoration in the region.

Altered growth conditions more than reforestation counteracted forest biomass carbon emissions 1990-2020

Summary: This study reveals that deforestation is the main driver of carbon emissions in global forests between 1990 and 2020. Without changes in forest area, harvest, or burnt area, global forest biomass would become a net carbon sink instead of a carbon source. Actively ending deforestation and reducing wood harvest are essential strategies for climate-change mitigation due to the potential discontinuation of the carbon sink function in the future.

Severe depletion of available deep soil water induced by revegetation on the arid and semiarid Loess Plateau

Summary: Artificial revegetation in arid and semiarid areas of the Loess Plateau leads to water deficits in deep soil, especially with forest revegetation showing the most severe impact. The choice of tree species and time since restoration significantly affect soil water status. Surprisingly, deep soil water depletion is even more severe in high rainfall areas, contrary to expectations. Natural restoration, such as grasslands, is a better option as it results in higher and more stable soil water availability.
