New contributions of comparative leaf anatomy to the phylogeny of Stigmaphylloids (Malpighiaceae Juss.)

Milena Pereira Vilarinho et al.

Summary: This study investigates the anatomical characters that distinguish the genera Bronwenia and Diplopterys, using Stigmaphyllon and Banisteriopsis as outgroups, in order to support the phylogenetic relations in the Stigmaphylloid clade and future classifications based on leaf anatomy. The leaf anatomy of these four genera was evaluated and promising characters were reconstructed using the molecular phylogeny of Malpighiaceae. Mapping the anatomical characters in the phylogenetic tree can help propose new classifications.
