Endo-?-mannanase and superoxide dismutase as enzymatic markers for lettuce seeds thermotolerance

Pedro Yuri Cavasin et al.

Summary: At higher temperatures, lettuce seeds may have difficulty germinating, impacting crop establishment and production. This study aimed to assess the maternal effect on thermotolerance in lettuce seeds and identify enzymatic markers. 'Everglades' and its reciprocal hybrids showed no influence on germination compared to other treatments. Higher temperatures affected the activity of all enzymes, but superoxide dismutase and endo-beta-mannanase had a stronger correlation with physiological changes. These enzymes can be used as markers for selecting thermotolerant genotypes.

Effects of harvest time on seed vigor, enzyme activity and gene expression of conventional japonica rice

Minyi Zhu et al.

Summary: Seed vigor is influenced by harvest time, with optimal harvest time around 50 days after flowering. Early harvest can increase germination rate and field emergence rate, decrease mean germination time, and alter enzyme activity and gene expression related to seed vigor.

Improving oxidative stress resilience in plants

Pavel Kerchev et al.

Summary: Reactive oxygen species (ROS), once considered harmful metabolic byproducts, are now seen as integral to cellular programs, activating signaling pathways that regulate plant growth, development, and defense. Adverse environmental conditions can lead to excessive ROS levels, causing oxidative stress and negative impacts on cellular components. Research efforts have focused on enhancing antioxidant mechanisms to improve oxidative stress resilience in both model and crop species.

Oxidative Stress and Antioxidant Metabolism under Adverse Environmental Conditions: a Review

Pedro Garcia-Caparros et al.

Summary: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are natural byproducts of oxygen metabolism, primarily generated in cell compartments such as the apoplast, mitochondria, chloroplasts, and peroxisomes. Cells have a balance between ROS generation and elimination, but this balance can be disrupted by various stress factors, leading to cellular damage. The antioxidant defense system in cells, composed of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, works together to scavenge ROS and plays a crucial role in plant immunity, growth, and development.

Comparative transcriptomics and metabolomics analyses provide insights into thermal resistance in lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.)

Shiwei Wei et al.

Summary: The study found that metabolic changes and upregulation of gene expression in lettuce under high temperature conditions are mainly related to flavonoid biosynthesis. This provides a comprehensive understanding of the complex molecular mechanisms underlying lettuce's response to thermal stress.

Genetic control of thermoinhibition tolerance in lettuce seeds

Daniele Fatima de Oliveira et al.

Summary: The genetic control of thermoinhibition tolerance in lettuce seeds is attributed to one or a few genes, with additive effects being more expressive and narrow-sense heritability relatively high, allowing for the prediction of success in selection.
