Basement morphology of the fold-and-thrust belt and foreland basin of the United Arab Emirates: Evidence for thick-skinned tectonics in the northern Oman-UAE Mountains

Ahmed Abdelmaksoud et al.

Summary: In this study, the basement depths in the United Arab Emirates' fold-and-thrust belt (FTB) and its associated foreland basins were determined and the relationship between shallow sedimentary structures and deep basement features was investigated. The results showed that thrusts, backthrusts, and folds were observed in the northern portions of the study area, while the Tarabat backthrust dominated the southern region. The 3D gravity inversion results suggested an increase in basement depth and the thickness of late Oligocene-early Miocene successions towards the north, indicating a northward increase in the severity of thrusting and crustal loading along the Khusub thrust. The correlation between basement uplifts and shallower anticlinal features suggested that the basement structures were reactivated during the Late Cretaceous ophiolite obduction and the late Oligocene-early Miocene Zagros collision.

Tectono-Stratigraphic Evolution of the Foreland Fold-and-Thrust Belt of the United Arab Emirates

A. Abdelmaksoud et al.

Summary: The subsurface and surface structural geometries of the UAE fold-and-thrust belt and foreland basins were studied using seismic, well data, and surface geology. The study revealed the transition of the Arabian margin from a rifted passive margin to a foreland basin, with major inversion of rift faults in the northern region and possible basement origin in the southern region.

Groundwater characterization in arid regions using seismic and gravity attributes: Al Jaww Plain, UAE

Pier Paolo G. Bruno et al.

Summary: This paper presents a multivariate approach for geophysical characterization of subsurface rocks for groundwater exploration in arid environments. Integrating seismic profiles and gravity data, the study details the tectonic settings and water-bearing formations of Al Jaww Plain in the UAE. Edge-detection techniques reveal unreported tectonic lineaments, and tomographic inversion is used to characterize rock petrophysical properties. K-means clustering is employed to classify subsurface areas with similar geophysical properties for groundwater exploration.

Summary: This study used seismic and gravimetric models to characterize the structural system of the Las Tres V?rgenes Volcanic Complex, analyze the movement of geothermal fluids, and identify new potential geothermal areas. The integrated results reveal the geological structures and potential geothermal resources within the volcanic complex.
