Effectiveness of physical exercise and neuromuscular electrical stimulation interventions for preventing and treating intensive care unit-acquired weakness: A systematic review of randomized controlled trials

Guillermo Garcia-Perez-de-Sevilla et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of physical exercise or neuromuscular electrical stimulation interventions in preventing muscle mass loss and weakness in intensive care unit patients and recovering patients with acquired weakness. Through a systematic review of randomized controlled trials, it was found that both interventions were effective in preventing muscle loss and reducing hospitalization length. Physical exercise increased functionality while both interventions increased muscle strength in discharged patients. These findings highlight the importance of these interventions in ICU patients.

EFFECT OF NEUROMUSCULAR ELECTRICAL STIMULATION ON THE RECOVERY OF PEOPLE WITH COVID-19 ADMITTED TO THE INTENSIVE CARE UNIT: A NARRATIVE REVIEW

Louise C. Burgess et al.

Summary: Rehabilitation of COVID-19 patients after intensive care unit treatment can be complex, with many long-term multi-organ impairments. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation is an effective technique to prevent muscle atrophy, improve muscle strength, and aid in recovery. Evidence suggests that it may play a role in the weaning of patients from ventilators and could be a suitable treatment modality for COVID-19 rehabilitation pathways.
