Dynamic Reconstitution Between Copper Single Atoms and Clusters for Electrocatalytic Urea Synthesis

Xiaoxiao Wei et al.

Summary: Reported herein is a method for synthesizing urea using copper single atoms decorated on a CeO2 support (Cu-1-CeO2) as the catalyst, which exhibits an average urea yield rate of 52.84 mmol h(-1) g(cat.)(-1) at -1.6 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. Operando X-ray absorption spectra demonstrate the reconstitution of copper single atoms (Cu-1) to clusters (Cu-4) during electrolysis. Favorable C-N coupling reactions and urea formation on Cu-4 are validated using operando synchrotron-radiation Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. Dynamic and reversible transformations of clusters to single-atom configurations occur when the applied potential is switched to an open-circuit potential, endowing the catalyst with superior structural and electrochemical stabilities.

Elucidation of the Synergistic Effect of Dopants and Vacancies on Promoted Selectivity for CO2 Electroreduction to Formate

Zhongjian Li et al.

Summary: A new type of SnO2 nanosheet with simultaneous N dopants and oxygen vacancies (V-O-rich N-SnO2 NS) exhibits high catalytic selectivity for CO2 conversion to formate (HCOO-) through a likely synergistic effect. The low coordination Sn-N moieties, regulated by V-O and N dopants, serve as active sites with optimal electronic and geometric structures. Theoretical calculations show that the reaction free energy of HCOO* protonation is decreased on the V-O-rich N-SnO2 NS, enhancing HCOO- selectivity and inhibiting the hydrogen evolution reaction.

Unified mechanistic understanding of CO2 reduction to CO on transition metal and single atom catalysts

Sudarshan Vijay et al.

Summary: The study investigates the activity of transition metals, metal-nitrogen-doped carbon catalysts, and supported phthalocyanine in the CO2 electroreduction to CO, and presents a unified mechanistic picture. It is found that MNCs have similar electron transfer properties to TMs in CO2 conversion, but can be limited by either CO2 star adsorption or proton-electron transfer reactions. The increased activity of MNC catalysts is attributed to the stabilization of larger adsorbate dipoles due to their discrete and narrow d states.
