V. M. Leal et al.

Summary: Lithium-ion batteries are widely used due to their high energy density, capacitance, durability, and safety. However, their widespread use leads to the generation of electronic waste. Battery recycling can minimize environmental contamination and reduce production costs by recovering valuable raw materials. Various methods such as pyrometallurgical, biometallurgical, and hydrometallurgical processes are used for recycling. Environmentally friendly methods for battery recycling and material synthesis need to be developed.

Structural Transformation in a Sulfurized Polymer Cathode to Enable Long-Life Rechargeable Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Shen Wang et al.

Summary: Sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) is a type of sulfur-bonded polymer that exhibits stable cycles in lithium-sulfur batteries. However, its exact molecular structure and electrochemical reaction mechanism are still unclear. In this study, using a SPAN thin film platform and various analytical tools, it was found that the capacity loss of SPAN is associated with intramolecular dehydrogenation and the loss of sulfur, resulting in an increase in aromaticity and electronic conductivity. The presence of a conductive carbon additive in the cathode promotes the completion of the reaction. A synthesis procedure was developed based on the proposed mechanism to reduce the irreversible capacity loss by more than 50%. These findings provide insights for the design of high-performance sulfurized polymer cathode materials.

Uncoordinated chemistry enables highly conductive and stable electrolyte/filler interfaces for solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries

Yanfei Zhu et al.

Summary: Composite-polymer-electrolytes (CPEs) embedded with an unsaturated coordination Prussian blue analog (UCPBA) filler demonstrate fast and preferential Li+ conduction through a chemically stable electrolyte/filler interface (EFI). The unsaturated Co-O coordination in UCPBA ensures a stable EFI and prevents side reactions, while the Lewis-acid metal centers attract the Lewis-base anions of Li salts, enhancing Li+ disassociation and transference number (tLi+). These CPEs exhibit high room-temperature ionic conductivity and excellent cyclability and capacity retention for solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries.

Selective Nitridation Crafted a High-Density, Carbon-Free Heterostructure Host with Built-In Electric Field for Enhanced Energy Density Li-S Batteries

Hongmei Wang et al.

Summary: To achieve high energy densities in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, it is important to develop dense electrodes and reduce the electrolyte and other lightweight inactive components. In this study, a compact TiO2@VN heterostructure with high true density was proposed as a carbon-free dual-capable host for both sulfur and lithium. The heterostructure integrated adsorptive TiO2 with conductive VN to trap, migrate, and convert polysulfides effectively. The TiO2@VN-S composite exhibited high tap-density and low porosity, resulting in dual-boosted cathode-level peak volumetric/gravimetric-energy-densities and prominent areal capacity. The TiO2@VN also demonstrated lithiophilicity as a host material, allowing for uniform Li nucleation and restrained dendrite growth. This enabled the assembled full-cell to achieve high electrode-level volumetric/gravimetric-energy-density with limited lithium excess.

Summary: Solid-state lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, known for their high energy density and safety, have been hindered by slow redox kinetics and large volume change of sulfur during charge/discharge. In this study, a polymer-in-salt solid-state electrolyte is utilized to anchor sulfur in a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) substrate, leading to faster redox kinetics and smaller volume change compared to conventional Li-S batteries. The technique also introduces opportunities for designing high-performance solid-state Li-S batteries.
