Summary: Recent data show that the incidence rate of malignant appendiceal tumors in England is increasing, primarily due to an increase in neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). Comparable incidence rate increases were observed across different age groups, genders, and socioeconomic deprivation quintiles. The study also suggests that the increased diagnosis of low-grade NETs may be attributed to changes in pathological classification systems.

Summary: The risk of occult appendiceal neoplasm is low in patients under the age of 30; however, the rate of appendiceal neoplasm in patients 30 years and older is 11%, increasing with age to 16% for patients 50 years and older. Considering these findings, it is recommended to consider interval appendectomy in all patients 30 years and older with complicated appendicitis.

Appendiceal neoplasm incidence and mortality rates are on the rise in Australia

Summary: The incidence and mortality rates of appendiceal neoplasms (ANs) in Australia have significantly increased across both genders and age groups, with incidence rates rising by 415% and mortality rates by 130%. Controlling for age and gender, the incidence rates increased by 20% every four years, and controlling for age, the mortality rates increased by 8% every four years.
