Circularly Polarized Light Responsive Materials: Design Strategies and Applications

Yiping Liu et al.

Summary: This review systematically summarizes and discusses the application-guided design strategies of circularly polarized light (CPL)-responsive materials. CPL illumination enables the direct synthesis of helical polymers and chiral inorganic nanostructures, and their intramolecular folding and self-assembly are modulated by light. In the aggregated state and liquid crystal phase, the helical sense of molecular packing is sensitive to the enantiomeric bias brought by CPL, achieving chiral amplification. Furthermore, applications of CPL detection and biomedical applications are discussed.

Circularly Polarized Fluorescence Energy Transfer for Constructing Multicolor Circularly Polarized Luminescence Films with Controllable Handedness

Kai Yang et al.

Summary: Utilizing achiral fluorophores to achieve circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) is important but limited by chirality transfer. Inspired by biological light-harvesting systems, a new strategy called circularly polarized fluorescence energy transfer (CPF-ET) is proposed to explore multicolor CPL films without chirality transfer. CPL is successfully realized through both radiative and nonradiative energy transfer. Chiral fluorescent helical polyacetylene acts as a circularly polarized fluorescence energy donor, while achiral fluorophores serve as energy acceptors. This work provides a facile and versatile platform for achieving CPL by taking advantage of achiral fluorophores.

Summary: Chirality is crucial in chemistry, biology, and optoelectronic materials, with recent interest in chiral materials with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties. The most effective strategy for designing a chiral AIE luminogen is to attach a chiral scaffold to an AIE-active fluorophore through covalent bonds, and latent chirality can also be induced in some propeller-like or shell-like AIEgens. Additionally, the introduction of an AIE unit into chiral materials can enhance their efficiency in circularly polarized luminescence and the dissymmetric factors of their helical architectures formed through self-assembly.
