The Antigenic Membrane Protein (Amp) of Rice Orange Leaf Phytoplasma Suppresses Host Defenses and Is Involved in Pathogenicity

Zhiyi Wang et al.

Summary: Phytoplasmas are uncultivable, phloem-limited, phytopathogenic bacteria that pose a major threat to agriculture worldwide. In this study, an antigenic membrane protein (Amp) of rice orange leaf phytoplasma (ROLP) was identified, which interacts with the actin of its insect vector, and it was demonstrated that Amp can promote the accumulation of ROLP in rice and tobacco plants.

Phytoplasma effector Zaofeng6 induces shoot proliferation by decreasing the expression of ZjTCP7 in Ziziphus jujuba

Peng Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, eight putative effector proteins of the jujube witches' broom (JWB) phytoplasma were identified, and one of them, Zaofeng6, was found to induce witches' broom symptoms and shoot proliferation. Zaofeng6 was also shown to interact with ZjTCP7 and decrease its expression, which in turn affected the expression of genes in the strigolactone signaling pathway. These findings contribute to our understanding of the jujube witches' broom disease.

Diversity and distribution of Type VI Secretion System gene clusters in bacterial plasmids

Sergio Morgado et al.

Summary: Type VI secretion system (T6SS) is a nanomolecular apparatus that allows the delivery of effector molecules through the cell envelope of a donor bacterium to prokaryotic and/or eukaryotic cells, playing a role in bacterial competition, virulence, and host interaction. The study reveals that T6SS is patchily distributed in bacterial genomes and may be associated with horizontal gene transfer. Plasmids could potentially serve as a key mechanism in the spread of T6SS in bacteria.

Plants and Phytoplasmas: When Bacteria Modify Plants

Assunta Bertaccini

Summary: The presence of plant pathogen phytoplasmas is extremely dangerous for agricultural ecosystems and can cause significant economic losses. They have the ability to manipulate host metabolic pathways without causing harm to the host. The management of phytoplasma-associated diseases is challenging due to the continuous patho-adaptation mechanism and the coexistence of other pathogens. It is therefore important to reduce the impact of phytoplasma-related diseases to protect plant biodiversity.

Parasitic modulation of host development by ubiquitin-independent protein degradation

Weijie Huang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates how SAP05 protein effectors from insect-vectored plant pathogenic phytoplasmas control several plant developmental processes by prolonging host lifespan and inducing witches' broom-like proliferations of leaf and sterile shoots. These effectors act by mediating the concurrent degradation of SPL and GATA developmental regulators via a process that relies on hijacking the plant ubiquitin receptor RPN10.
