More than a simple egg: Underlying mechanisms of cold tolerance in avian embryos

The mechanisms behind this cold tolerance are still unknown, but research suggests that embryos slow down their heartbeat rates and metabolism, and can enter a torpid-like state of cardiac arrest in severe cold temperatures. Cold tolerance in avian embryos appears to be a heritable trait that is influenced by both intrinsic and extrinsic factors, and is an optimal strategy to mitigate the adverse effects of cold conditions on development in response to fluctuating environmental temperatures.
