Investigation of biochar amendments on odor reduction and their characteristics during food waste co-composting

Minh Ky Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the variation of physicochemical characteristics during the co-composting of food waste and sawdust mixed biochar, and assessed the efficiency of biochar-composting combined amendment materials for reducing odor emissions and their maturity. The results showed that adding biochar could change the temperature, moisture, and pH during composting, and minimize the emissions of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide. The addition of 20% biochar resulted in the lowest ammonia and hydrogen sulfide emissions, with complete cessation of emissions on day 17. Furthermore, the compost was mature and non-phytotoxic. These findings highlight the effectiveness of biochar amendment in reducing odor emissions and enhancing compost maturity, with potential applications in agricultural fields.

Lauric Acid from the Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) and Its Potential Applications

Tuti Suryati et al.

Summary: Black soldier fly (BSF) larvae are being developed as bioconversion agents for organic waste treatment. The larvae have a high protein and lipid content, mainly used as feed for fish, poultry, and other animals. The lipid content of BSF larvae can reach up to 57.8% and consists mainly of medium-chain saturated fatty acids, with lauric acid (LA) being the dominant component. LA content can be increased by feeding the larvae with substrates containing digestible carbohydrates, reaching 76.13% when reared on fruit waste. LA has antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and anticancer properties and finds applications in various fields. This review aims to explore the potential applications of BSF larvae as a novel source of LA.

Effect of hydrothermal treatment on organic matter degradation, phytotoxicity, and microbial communities in model food waste composting

Syazni Zainul Kamal et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal treatment (HTT) as a pretreatment for compost raw material has shown positive effects on food waste composting, including enhanced solubility of organic material, improved bioaugmentation, and reduced biohazard. HTT pretreatment resulted in less organic matter degradation and lower compost phytotoxicity compared to non-HTT-pretreated compost. High-throughput microbial community analysis revealed the dominance of Firmicutes and the presence of other bacterial groups in non-HTT-pretreated compost. Bacillus and Lysinibacillus were identified as the main contributors to food waste composting. HTT is advantageous for pretreating easily degradable food waste, leading to the production of compost with reduced phytotoxicity.

Summary: The black soldier fly (BSF) is a sustainable solution for food waste management and protein production. This study found that feeding BSF larvae with a mixture of 30% soybean curd residue and 70% kitchen waste resulted in the highest larval biomass and lipid content, and the lowest feed conversion ratio. Co-digestion also improved larval yield and bioconversion rate. These findings highlight the important role of BSF larvae in organic materials management.

Process efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions in black soldier fly larvae composting of fruit and vegetable waste with and without pre-treatment

L. Lindberg et al.

Summary: Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) composting is a technology that implements circular economy principles. This study investigated the efficiency and emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) and ammonia from BSFL composting of orange peels and broccoli and cauliflower trimmings. Results showed that pre-treatment did not significantly improve waste-to-biomass conversion efficiency (BCE), but it reduced the material amount. GHG emissions were low, and pre-treatment increased waste treatment capacity. However, it also increased ammonia emissions.

Summary: Feeding food losses and food waste (FLW) to livestock can reduce environmental impact in livestock production, but there are challenges in terms of feed quality and production systems. Mixing different FLW streams can address variability in nutritional value and physical characteristics, but more research is needed. Summary: Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) can be effectively grown using thermally pre-treated waste activated sludge (WAS). The pre-treatment improves the palatability of the substrate and enhances the growth of BSFL, especially at temperatures above 75°C. The highest larva weight gain was observed at a pre-treatment temperature of 90°C for 16 hours. The changes in WAS characteristics, particularly soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD), were found to accurately predict the growth behavior of BSFL.

Summary: Insect breeding or farming is an emerging industry that can meet the growing demand for protein and reduce high unemployment rates, especially in Africa. However, in order to ensure sustainability and safety, the value chain of insect breeding needs to be regulated and relevant policies need to be formulated. Safety issues, such as determining which species should be reared and ensuring traceability, will be crucial for the expansion of the sector. This paper provides an analysis of safety, regulatory, and environmental issues related to breeding and international trade of edible insects in Africa, along with case studies and recommendations for sustainable use of insects for food and feed.

A Review of Pretreatment Methods to Improve Agri-Food Waste Bioconversion by Black Soldier Fly Larvae

Daniela A. Peguero et al.

Summary: As the world population grows, the demand for food increases, but currently about 30-40% of food is lost or wasted along the production chain. Using the larvae of the black soldier fly (BSFL) to convert and recover agricultural and food waste is an innovative approach that can turn organic waste into insect biomass for animal feed, fertilizer, or bioenergy. However, there are concerns about the variability in BSFL bioconversion and processing due to the variability of the substrate, especially for substrates with high lignin and cellulose contents. Studies suggest that pretreatment methods may improve the digestibility and biodegradability of the substrate by BSFL.
