The interface of explicit and implicit second-language knowledge: A longitudinal study

Kathy MinHye Kim et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to examine the longitudinal associations between two forms of second language (L2) knowledge (explicit and implicit) and the activity types that facilitate different processing mechanisms (form- and meaning-focused). The results suggest that L2 explicit and implicit knowledge influenced each other reciprocally over time, and neither activity type predicted knowledge development.

Grammar teaching in ELT: A cross-national comparison of teacher-reported practices

Alexandra Schurz et al.

Summary: This article mainly investigates the teaching methods in English classrooms in secondary schools in Sweden, Austria, and France, and finds some differences between different educational levels and countries. Explicit and implicit knowledge and learning of an additional language: A research agenda

Karen Roehr-Brackin

Summary: This paper proposes a research agenda for explicit and implicit knowledge and learning of second or additional languages. It highlights three agenda items: identifying valid and reliable measures for explicit and implicit knowledge and learning, investigating these across the human lifespan, and capturing the complex interplay of factors influencing the development of explicit and implicit knowledge. Concrete tasks for future research are proposed to assist investigators in formulating research questions and designs.

Accuracy and Fluency Teaching and the Role of Extramural English: A Tale of Three Countries

Alexandra Schurz et al.

Summary: European learners of English are increasingly using this language recreationally, referred to as Extramural English (EE). This study investigates how English teachers from Austria, France, and Sweden perceive their students' engagement in EE and its relationship with English Language Teaching (ELT) practices. The results show that Swedish teachers have a more positive and detailed understanding of the impact of EE on learning, especially in terms of grammar acquisition. Additionally, ELT in Sweden intentionally addresses gaps in language areas not fully developed through EE.
