Single-atom Co-N-C catalysts for high-efficiency reverse water-gas shift reaction

Yihui Li et al.

Summary: Designing efficient non-precious metal catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation is a significant challenge. Cobalt-based catalysts often failed to catalyze the reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction with high CO selectivity and stability. This study provided a new strategy for designing Co-based RWGS catalysts with excellent performance.

Renewable energy-to-green hydrogen: A review of main resources routes, processes and evaluation

Qusay Hassan et al.

Summary: Hydrogen is a promising fuel for eco-friendly energy sources and can be derived from renewable sources. However, renewables-to-hydrogen methods are still in their early stages and require substantial work for widespread recognition in sustainability strategies. This analysis extensively reviews renewables-to-hydrogen technologies, highlighting current states and potential improvements in areas such as efficiency, emissions, costs, mobility, and public acceptance. The study identifies the urgent need for incorporating renewable energy, reducing production costs, and addressing the lack of techno-economic and ecological analyses for renewables-to-hydrogen pathways. The results will facilitate the safe utilization of hydrogen in large energy facilities.

Surface Redox Dynamics in Gold-Zinc CO2 Hydrogenation Catalysts

Scott R. Docherty et al.

Summary: This study investigates the active state of Au-Zn catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. Silica-supported bimetallic Au-Zn alloys, prepared by surface organometallic chemistry (SOMC), are shown to be efficient catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), together with gas-switching experiments, amplifies subtle changes occurring at the surface of the catalyst. Multivariate curve resolution alternating least-squares (MCR-ALS) analysis identifies an Au-Zn alloy and reveals its reversible redox changes under reaction conditions. These findings highlight the role of alloying and dealloying in Au-based CO2 hydrogenation catalysts and the significance of reversible processes in driving reactivity.

Structure Sensitivity of CO2 Hydrogenation on Ni Revisited

Jerome F. M. Simons et al.

Summary: This study investigates the structure sensitivity of CO2 hydrogenation on nickel nanoparticle catalysts and reveals the different characteristics of active sites for CO2 conversion to CO and subsequent hydrogenation to CH4. It demonstrates that the size of the nanoparticles affects the reaction steps differently, with smaller particles losing their methanation activity due to a lower availability of active sites.

Breaking structure sensitivity in CO2 hydrogenation by tuning metal-oxide interfaces in supported cobalt nanoparticles

Alexander Parastaev et al.

Summary: A high dispersion of the active metal phase on oxide supports is crucial for designing efficient heterogeneous catalysts. In addition to nanoparticles, clusters and single metal atoms also have potential applications in various reactions. However, reducing the size of metal particles below a certain threshold often leads to decreased catalytic performance due to structure sensitivity. In this study, the authors demonstrate that engineering the catalytic sites at the metal-oxide interface in cerium oxide-zirconium dioxide (ceria-zirconia)-supported cobalt overcomes this issue and produces a highly active CO2 methanation catalyst with superior performance compared to larger particles under the same conditions.

Ga and Zn increase the oxygen affinity of Cu-based catalysts for the COx hydrogenation according to ab initio atomistic thermodynamics

Andreas Mueller et al.

Summary: The direct hydrogenation of CO or CO2 to methanol is an important research area in sustainable development. This study investigates the alloying and surface formation of Cu-based catalysts with Ga and Zn promoters using periodic DFT calculations and ab initio thermodynamics. The results show that under CO2 hydrogenation conditions, the promoters undergo partial dealloying and oxidation, while under CO hydrogenation conditions, the surface is fully reduced and alloyed. The preferred state of the catalyst is influenced by the gas phase composition, leading to different catalytic activity and stability.

Scott R. Docherty et al.

Summary: The study found that small, alloyed PdGa nanoparticles prepared through surface organometallic chemistry exhibit high activity and selectivity in catalyzing the hydrogenation of CO2 to CH3OH, compared to silica-supported Pd nanoparticles. Alloying is observed in the material, with a dynamic dealloying/realloying process occurring through Ga redox.
